On this snowy day, we thought it would be fun to take you back a few months in time. Check out this Black Bear enjoying a beaver wetland in Hinesburg. Beaver wetlands are important for many species, while also improving water quality by allowing the water to spread out, slow down, drop sediment, and connect to groundwater.

We had a great native plants walk a couple weeks ago with Tobi Schulman of Bird and Bee Plants. Tobi is a former member of the Hinesburg Conservation Commission. We learned about several really interesting species including Clammy Ground Cherry, important for specialist bees, and Tall Windflower. If you're interested in adding some native plants to your garden or lawn, consider reaching out to Tobi - she has a lot of great plants and knowledge!

The Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) is seeking volunteers to participate in the Second Vermont Butterfly Atlas. A training workshop will take place at the Starksboro Library, on Monday, July 21 from 10am – 2pm. The workshop will include:

· An introduction to the Butterfly Atlas
· A guided butterfly survey walk
· A hands-on demonstration of how to submit data

The Second Vermont Butterfly Atlas is a five-year initiative (2023-2027) aimed at updating our knowledge of butterfly species and populations in Vermont. In just the first two years, dedicated volunteers have discovered three species never before recorded in the state and contributed nearly 23,000 butterfly observations. This effort will help us conserve the butterflies we love.

Bring your cell phones to download eButterfly. Also bring water and a sack lunch if desired.

This workshop is sponsored jointly by the Starksboro Conservation Commission and the Starksboro Library. There is no need to pre-register. You can email questions to margigregory at gmail.com

Some of the targeted areas are in Hinesburg, Monkton and Starksboro. Participants are encouraged to attend from all three towns. Others are welcome also.

Join us for a presentation Feb 5 at 6:30 PM at the Starksboro Public Library, entitled July 2024 flooding along the Lewis Creek in Starksboro: Strategies for building back better.

In July 2024, Starksboro was one of several Vermont communities that experienced flooding impacts from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. In this presentation hosted by the Starksboro Conservation Commission and LCA, Kristen Underwood will share monitoring data that characterize the magnitude of the July event, review the geologic and land use conditions that led to flooding vulnerabilities, and illustrate how floodwater access to conserved floodplains helped to dissipate the energy of this flood and reduce downstream impacts. She will also review various mitigation strategies that can be chosen to avoid or lessen damages in future floods including examples from within and outside of the Lewis Creek watershed.

Kristen Underwood is a Research Faculty member in the UVM Dept of Civil & Environmental Engineering and previously worked as a technical advisor to Lewis Creek Association performing geomorphic assessments and advising on restoration and conservation projects in the Lewis Creek watershed.

We are looking forward to tomorrow's presentation! Join Kiley Briggs, Director of Conservation for The Orianne Society, to learn more about the ecology of Wood Turtles, the work being done to save this vulnerable species, and how landowners can participate in Wood Turtle conservation. Hinesburg's Carpenter-Carse Library, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 PM! Co-hosted by LCA, Charlotte, Hinesburg, and Starksboro Conservation Commissions. Light refreshments will be available.

One of Vermont's most secretive and charismatic animals is the Wood Turtle. Feeding extensively on land, Wood Turtles roam great distances from the valley streams where they overwinter. With many river valleys bordered by roads and farms, too many of these rare turtles are killed by cars and machinery. In their dependence on conservation strategies that connect land and water resources together, Wood Turtles serve as an ambassador for river valley conservation, to the benefit of many other species of wildlife.
