HINESBURG, VT - On Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 12:10pm, Hinesburg Fire Department received a direct phone call from Shelburne Dispatch reporting an unpermitted burn in the area of Route 116 and Pond Road in St George. Shelburne Dispatch stated they were not issuing permits due to high winds and dry conditions.

Hinesburg Engine 1 responded immediately to further investigate. Enroute to the scene, a column of smoke was noted from the reported area and mutual aid was requested from the Shelburne Fire Department and Williston Fire Department. Hinesburg Engine 1 arrived on scene to find 1/2 acre of field burning, with high wind conditions. Crews deployed specialized wildland hose bags and contained the fire within 20 minutes of arrival. In total, 12 firefighters and 7 apparatus responded and operated on scene. During operations, it was noted that the incident was located in the Town of Shelburne.

A reminder that burn permits are required for all open burning in Vermont, regardless of municipality. Hinesburg and St George residents can obtain burn permits by calling Shelburne Dispatch at (802) 985-8051. Shelburne Dispatch does reserve the right to not issue permits, based on weather conditions.

Hinesburg Firefighters Tackle Back-to-Back Weekend Fires

HINESBURG, VT – Just before 6:00 PM on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the Hinesburg Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm on Kaileys Way. An update from the Shelburne Communications Center indicated a neighbor heard the alarm sounding and smelled smoke.

First arriving fire officer, Captain Waite, reported smoke showing from a second-floor window and requested mutual aid.

Hinesburg Engine 1 arrived on scene and deployed a hose line to the second floor. Firefighters forced entry into the home after receiving no answer from occupants. Inside, crews encountered a moderate smoke condition and quickly conducted a primary search. Firefighters located a small cooking fire on the stove that had not extended beyond the pan. The heat source was secured, and the pan was removed from the building once it was safe to do so.

Due to smoke conditions, crews conducted ventilation to clear the residence.
Hinesburg Fire Department was assisted on scene by Charlotte Car 1 and Williston Engine 1.

While still operating in Hinesburg, the Charlotte Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in their town. At the request of Charlotte Car 1, Hinesburg Engine 1 and the Deputy Chief responded immediately. With a crew already assembled, Engine 1 was able to respond without delay and provide and interior fire attack.

Please see the attached press release regarding the fire in Charlotte from Charlotte Fire Chief Jamie Valyou.

Regarding the Hinesburg incident - Firefighters would like to remind residents to never leave cooking unattended. Cooking is the leading cause of fires and fire-related injuries in the United States, accounting for nearly half of all reported home fires.

This incident could have been far more serious if not for working smoke alarms and alert neighbors who recognized the danger and called 911 promptly.

We are proud to serve the residents of Hinesburg and St. George, and to support our neighboring communities through mutual aid. For more information, reach out to Chief Prescott Nadeau - [email protected]

Sunday Evening Fire Results in Fatality

HINESBURG, VT - At 6:02 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the Hinesburg Fire Department was dispatched to 245 Lyman Meadows for a reported structure fire with a possible occupant inside.

Upon arrival, firefighters forced entry into the home and immediately prioritized a search due to reports of a person inside. Firefighters encountered moderate smoke conditions which significantly reduced visibility. During the search, crews located the fire and were able to knock down a significant portion using a pressurized water fire extinguisher.

At the same time, firefighters located a deceased individual inside the residence and notified the Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit. After confirming there was no further fire spread, the scene was turned over to Vermont State Police.

Mutual aid was requested from Williston, Shelburne, Charlotte, Monkton, and Starksboro. We are grateful for the swift response and support from our neighboring agencies.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

The fire is not considered suspicious. All questions should be directed to the Vermont State Police - 802-878-7111. Please refer to the media release below for additional information.
