🐾 LEAVE THEM BE: WHY PICKING UP OUTDOOR ANIMALS CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD 🐾

We all love animals and want to help them, but did you know that picking up a cat or dog you find outside isn't always the best or safest choice? Before you scoop up that neighborhood pet or community cat, here is what you need to know:

1. They Might Not Be Lost 🏡
Many outdoor cats are "community cats" or neighborhood pets who know exactly where their home is. Removing them from their immediate area can make it much harder for them to find their way back to their families.

2. Stray vs. Feral: Knowing the Difference 🐱
It’s easy to confuse a friendly stray with a feral animal.
• Stray Cats: Usually comfortable around people, might approach you, and are likely pets at one point.
• Feral Cats: Born in the wild or have had no human contact. They are unapproachable, highly stressed by handling, and will defend themselves if cornered.

3. Safety First (For You and the Animal) ⚠️
An animal outdoors—even a friendly-looking dog or cat—can become unpredictable, frightened, or aggressive if a stranger tries to pick them up or force them into a vehicle. Handling unfamiliar animals puts you at risk for bites or scratches and causes immense stress to the animal.

If you encounter an animal outdoors and are concerned for its safety, please take these steps instead of handling it yourself:

• Snap a Photo & Share: Take a picture from a safe distance and post it to local neighborhood groups or lost-and-found pet pages to see if anyone recognizes them.
• Look for an Owner: If a dog or cat is friendly and wearing a collar, try to read the tag without restraining the animal if it is safe to do so.
• Call the Professionals: If an animal appears sick, injured, aggressive, or in immediate danger, contact Liberty County Animal Services directly. Professional teams have the proper training and equipment to handle and transport animals safely.
