Qarterly Massachusetts Bay Harbor Safety Committee meeting, hosted at the Boston Marine Society in Charlestown.

Coast Guard, pilots, port operators, mariners, and harbormasters, all at one table to keep Boston Harbor and Mass Bay safe. Great meeting, as always. Thank you to the committee for all the time and effort.

Go check out the great photo on their page of a sailboat pulled out of the path of a ship by a Boston Line and Service vessel. That’s what this work is all about.

POST-NOR’EASTER ADVISORY: Check Your Vessels Safely.
Now that the nor’easter is moving offshore, we encourage all boat owners to check on their vessels as soon as local weather and water conditions are safe to do so.
When conducting your safety inspection, please remember to:
Inspect Pennants & Lines: Check mooring pennants and dock lines for severe chafing or strain.
Verify Electrical & Pumps: Test battery voltage levels and ensure bilge pumps are fully operational.
Check Bilges: Inspect bilges for any water accumulation or flooding.
Exercise Caution Boarding: Heavy wave action may have shifted heavy equipment, gear, or tools below deck—watch for sudden tripping and fall hazards when entering cabin spaces.
If you need emergency assistance or spot a vessel in distress, we are monitoring VHF Channel 16 and can be reached via 911.

While the worst of the Nor’easter is passing, Gale Warnings remain in effect until 9:00 PM tonight. Conditions on the water remain hazardous. Please conduct vessel checks from shore only—do not attempt to board boats or head out on tenders tonight. Surges, wind, and low visibility make boarding unsafe. Wait for daylight and calmer conditions tomorrow to assess lines and gear. Overall, the harbor faired well with limited vessel or property issue. For maritime emergencies, contact Hingham Police Dispatch 911.

Ever wonder what a Harbor Master does on a Sunday morning during a nor’easter?
While most people were staying warm indoors, I was out in the thick of the storm. A vessel broke its mooring and was pinned against a pier, taking on heavy structural damage by the second.
After evaluating the risks, I boarded, powered her up, and drove her off the pier to safety at the Hingham Shipyard.
Just another Sunday morning on the water. In conditions like that, you’re operating on a knife’s edge—balancing danger with calculated, split-second decisions to seize the right opening before it’s too late.
If you ever spot a person or a vessel in trouble during a storm, don’t hesitate—call 911 immediately. Stay safe out there!

STORM ADVISORY & HARBOR SAFETY NOTICE:

With severe weather approaching, all mariners must take immediate steps to secure their vessels, protect themselves, and adhere to harbor regulations. All preparations should be completed no later than 12:00 PM (noon) this Friday at the latest.

DO NOT RIDE OUT THE STORM ABOARD: Under no circumstances should anyone stay on their boat. During the height of the storm, conditions will be extremely hazardous, and emergency rescue operations may not be available. Your vessel can be replaced but your life cannot. Plan to be off the water well before the weather deteriorates.

Deadline for Preparations: Ensure all securing, hauling, and storm prep are finalized before noon on Friday. Do not wait until the wind and sea conditions build to make adjustments.
Inspect Pennants & Ground Tackle: If your vessel is remaining in the water on an authorized mooring, inspect your mooring pennants and chafing gear immediately. Double up lines where necessary and verify all hardware is sound.
Check Batteries & Bilge Pumps: Ensure batteries are fully charged and automatic bilge pumps are operational so vessels can dewater under heavy rainfall and sea wash.
Strict Mooring & Anchoring Rules: Do NOT relocate or anchor your vessel in another part of the harbor without explicit authorization. Unauthorized mooring, docking, or anchoring creates severe hazards for neighboring vessels and harbor infrastructure. Illegally moored or anchored vessels are subject to fines and immediate revocation of mooring permits and will need to be removed before the storm. If your assigned spot is unsafe or you feel the need to move, the boat must be hauled completely out of the waterways.
Secure your gear early, stay safe, and monitor local marine forecasts. Contact the Harbor Master Units directly with any urgent questions.
