Hingham Cultural Council

Hingham Cultural Council Granting support for innovative artistic and cultural endeavors that elevate our community!

Hingham’s Cultural Council is a group of residents who are appointed by the Select Board to dispense public funding by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Artists, musicians, non-profit community groups and schools with a cultural project may apply for funding by writing a grant proposal during the grant cycle. The application process normally begins September 1st; all grants must be submit

ted to the on-line grants management system by mid-October of the given year. Before applying for a grant, please visit Massachusetts Cultural Council at: https://massculturalcouncil.org/communities/local-cultural-council-program/

The Councilors review each application. Each project is then discussed in detail at our Voting Meeting, where we then select the appropriate projects for funding, based on our current guidelines.

On Father’s Day Weekend every year, SSAC hosts a three-day arts festival on Cohasset Common. Typically, over 25,000 people from the South Shore and beyond attend this magnificent event at which they encounter over 400 works created by artists from across the nation for the juried and members’ exhibitions under the main tent. The 2026 Arts Festival will recenter SSAC’s focus on art, the craft exhibitors and the community.

Along with Pop-Up Art School, and thanks to a Scituate Cultural Council Grant, the Scituate Town Library worked with patrons to create a shared art project of felted flowers. At six separate community events, patrons of all ages learned how to create beautiful felted flowers. Those flowers were then incorporated into a large mural that has been showcased in the library since April 8th.

If you haven’t yet seen Garden of Threads at the Scituate Town Library, there’s still time to experience this remarkable community art project before the exhibit closes at the end of May. 🌼🐝

Created in partnership with Pop-Up Art School and supported by a $1,500 grant from the Scituate Cultural Council, Garden of Threads brought together residents of all ages this spring to create hundreds of hand-felted flowers, butterflies, and bright fuzzy bumblebees that now bloom together in one joyful collaborative mural.

What makes this piece so special is not only its beauty, but the spirit behind it — children, teens, adults, families, and neighbors all contributing individual creations to something larger together.

We hope Scituate residents and visitors from across the South Shore will stop by the Library before the end of May to enjoy this vibrant celebration of creativity and community.
