You may hear your child's OT talk about "heavy work"...but what does that actually mean?
Heavy work activities activate the muscles and joints by pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, climbing, or crawling. These movements provide proprioceptive input, which can help many children feel more regulated, improve body awareness, and prepare for learning and play.
Heavy work doesn't require special equipment! Everyday activities like carrying groceries, pushing a laundry basket, climbing at the playground, or helping with chores all count.
If you're wondering whether heavy work could benefit your child, talk with your occupational therapist about strategies that fit their individual needs.
