Today, October 26th, we pause to honor the memory and sacrifice of two brave members of the Pleasantview Fire Protection District who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Line of Duty on this date in 1981: Firefighter Jerome Srejma and Firefighter Gary Michalek.

Remembering Their Service.
Firefighters Srejma and Michalek were tragically killed while battling a fire at a commercial building in Countryside, Illinois, when the roof collapsed. Their deaths were the first in the history of the Pleasantview Fire District, a devastating loss felt by the entire community and fire service.

• Firefighter Jerome Srejma was 26 years old and a six-year veteran of the department. Dedicated and talented, he was inspired to join the fire service by his uncle and was known for his quiet commitment to his volunteer work.
• Firefighter Gary Michalek was just 21 years old and had served with the department for less than a year. Young and eager, he had quickly become a valued member of the Pleasantview family.

We will forever be grateful for their courage, their commitment, and their dedication to protecting the lives and property of the citizens they served. Their spirit and sacrifice will always be a part of the fabric of the Pleasantview Fire Protection District.

Please take a moment today to remember Firefighter Jerome Srejma and Firefighter Gary Michalek. Their service will never be forgotten.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former Hinsdale Fire Chief Stanley Bulat. Chief Bulat served our community as Deputy Director and then Fire Chief from 1986-1993, leading the Hinsdale Fire Department with distinction and overseeing significant changes to our fire department. His commitment to public safety leaves a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time of loss.

The Hinsdale Fire Department is joining fire departments across the country this week by lighting our firehouse in red as part of the “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters” event leading up to International Firefighter’s Day on May 4. We would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the service of firefighters around the world.

The members of the Hinsdale Fire Department both past and present would like to commemorate this day, September 20th, as a day of remembering one of the great ones, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Johnson. He served the Village of Hinsdale with tremendous pride and mentored, inspired, and positively impacted a generation of Hinsdale Firefighters over the years. We miss you Mark, DC, Big, friend, and the consummate role model to us all. Thanks for showing us what “doing it right” looked like. Blessings to the entire Johnson Family. Please keep them all in your prayers on this day, and everyday. Thank you.
