This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we cherish today, and their memory deserves to live on for generations to come.

In Madison Townshipโ€™s historic Pleasant Valley Cemetery, a flag waves proudly this weekend among the resting places of our communityโ€™s pioneers and veterans. It stands as a tribute to the soldiers laid to rest there, individuals who answered the call of duty and whose legacy continues to shape our nation and our township.

As Pleasant Valley Cemetery undergoes restoration efforts to identify missing graves, restore weathered stones, and beautify the grounds, this flag serves as a powerful reminder that remembrance matters.

This Memorial Day, may we reflect not only on sacrifice, but also on the responsibility we share to honor and preserve the memories of those who rest in sacred places like Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Last night, the Madison Township Board voted unanimously to move forward with joining the Allen County Fire and EMS District, effective January 1, 2027, pending review and approval of an interlocal agreement.

This decision was not made lightly or quickly. Over the past year, the Board and I have participated in numerous meetings and discussions with Allen County fire chiefs, government officials, and community stakeholders. Extensive research, community input, and engagement with Hoagland Fire & EMS guided this process every step of the way.

Since 1930, Madison Township and the Village of Hoagland have been faithfully served by volunteer firefighters and emergency responders from our own community. That proud tradition was expanded in the early 1980s with the addition of EMS services. More recently, due to declining volunteer numbers, Madison Township supported paid daytime EMS staffing to ensure the needs of our residents continued to be met.

We deeply value and respect our volunteer members, who continue to provide outstanding service. However, the ongoing challenges in volunteer recruitment have brought us to a point where it is our responsibility as a Township to ensure reliable, consistent, and sustainable highโ€‘quality emergency services for all residents. At this moment in time, joining a unified, countywide fire and EMS district represents the right path forward.

Our volunteers will play a crucial role in the transition and in the continued delivery of emergency services for many years to come. Madison Township will work closely with the new Executive Fire Chief and existing county fire leadership to develop an interlocal agreement that is fiscally responsible, operationally robust, and community focused for Madison Township residents and the unified Allen County Fire and EMS District.

I fully expect representatives from the Allen County Fire and EMS District to conduct public hearings throughout the summer and into the fall. These hearings are anticipated to visit townships and un-incorporated communities across Allen County, providing residents with updates, information on the transition process, and a clearer understanding of what changes and impacts each community may see with the updated services.

Please keep an eye on this social media page for ongoing information about this process and the transition involving Madison Township and the new Fire and EMS District.

Additionally, I would like to sincerely thank you for the tremendous public engagement we received throughout this process. Input from public hearings held in Monroeville, Hoagland, and at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum, along with feedback shared during regular Madison Township Board meetings over the past year, played a vital role in this decision. We valued every question, comment, and concern, as that feedback helps guide informed and responsible decisionโ€‘making for our Township.

I fully support the direction Madison Township has chosen, and I remain committed to representing the people who call this community home. I will continue to be a voice for our residents and for the dedicated volunteer firefighters and EMTs who have served our Township with pride and compassion for generations. The mission of Hoagland Volunteer Fire and EMS, to protect lives and property through responsive emergency care, fire protection, prevention, and public education, reflects the heart of our community. Madison Township stands firmly behind that mission and is committed to ensuring it continues to serve our residents today and for generations to come.

Respectfully,
Brian Minich

Allen County Fire Protection District Information UPDATE:

The graphics included in this post compare current 2026 residential property tax amounts with the estimated property tax impact under the proposed Allen County Fire District tax rate if that rate was in effect in 2026. These graphics reflect impact on Madison Township residents only.
The intent of this post is to provide clearer, more reliable context so residents have a better understanding of what the potential impact may be.
These figures are estimates calculated using a tax calculator provided by the Allen County Auditor, which has been vetted and proven to be accurate for estimating purposes. However, no two properties are the same, and actual impacts will vary based on individual property values.
In reviewing this information, residents are encouraged to objectively consider the scope, level, and value of the services that would be provided in return.
