Last week, the Chief and Assistant Chief had the opportunity to attend the Oklahoma Chiefs of Police Association Conference.

This year’s conference marked the 50th anniversary of the association and brought together more than 150 Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs from across the state.

The conference provided valuable training and professional development through a wide range of classes and presentations.

Topics included leadership development, CLEET reporting requirements and updates, investigation deconfliction, grant writing, school protection, lethality assessment protocols, tribal law updates, property room priorities, liability issues, accreditation standards, and mental health awareness.

Attending conferences such as this allows law enforcement leaders to stay informed on current issues, strengthen professional partnerships, and continue improving the services provided to our community.

We had the pleasure of hosting the Hobart Girl Scout troop yesterday for a tour of our facility. During their visit, they got to see our 911 dispatch center, tour the officers’ area, training room, and interview room, and explore the features of our police vehicles.

We had a great time showing them around and sharing a behind the scenes look at our department. Thank you to the troop for stopping by we loved having you visit!

This Memorial Day I want to take time to remember Gregory A. Wagner, a South Dakota National Guard NCO with the 147th Field Artillery, he was a respected leader serving in Baghdad during one of the deadliest periods of the Iraq War.

His unit had been re-tasked from artillery to security and Iraq police transition missions.
On May 8, 2006, while returning from a police training mission, his Humvee convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device.

He was killed in a time when Baghdad was overwhelmed by sectarian violence and deadly roadside bombs. His death marked the 21st South Dakotan lost in the Global War on Terror. Two fellow soldiers, Spc. Brian Knigge and Sgt. Travis Simmons, were wounded in the same attack.

That same day, DynCorp contractor Rudy Mesa was also killed in the same IED attack.

As a private military contractor I was assigned to Wagners unit, I traveled throughout Baghdad with Staff Sgt. Wagner training numerous Iraqi police and military forces.

Every day before we left Camp Rustamiyah, he made sure we came together to say the Lord’s Prayer.

That’s the kind of man he was.
A great soldier. A steady leader. A good man.

I’m grateful I had the chance to serve alongside him. I want to take a moment to honor his and Rudy’s sacrifice to our country.
