THE GENERAL RICHARD T. KNOWLES LEGISLATIVE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
This program allows our New Mexico Representatives and Senators to nominate a student from their district for the scholarship.
The General Richard T. Knowles Legislative Scholarship covers any allowable NMMI charges not covered by other funds up to the award amount – approximately $5700 per school year. The Scholarship may be automatically renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains satisfactory academic progress towards graduation and acceptable performance in the NMMI Corps of Cadets among other requirements.
Application Process
Interested students need to submit a formal application for admission to NMMI or be a current cadet in good standing. They must also submit the following to the NMMI Legislative Coordinator:
• Scholarship Application
• Autobiographical Essay – minimum 250 words
• Three Letters of Recommendation
• Current Transcripts
Legislator’s Role
First Round
All completed application packets for students in your district will be emailed to you at the end of February. Due to COVID all applications will be sent by email this year. First round scholarship recipients will be announced at the end of March.
Second Round
What if there are no applications from students in your district in the first round?
Once the first round nominations are complete, the NMMI Legislative Coordinator will continue to send in new applications as they are submitted. Applicants from contiguous districts will also be submitted for review. The second round will begin after first round applicants have been announced. Second round nominations will be announced as nominations are completed. If your district has still gone un-awarded, the Legislative Coordinator will continue to submit new or un-awarded applicants through July until all districts have been filled or the application pool is depleted.
*Cadet must enroll at NMMI to receive this award.
