We absolutely stand with our LGBTQ community right here in our county and everywhere else. The organizers have acted in great faith and should have their right to hold their event respected.

Levelland Pride Event Sparks Heated Community Debate Ahead Of June Gathering

LEVELLAND, Texas — A planned Pride Month event at a public park in Levelland has sparked growing debate online as residents continue voicing both support and opposition ahead of the scheduled June 26 gathering.

Posts circulating throughout Levelland community Facebook groups show residents discussing concerns about a drag themed event reportedly planned at a city park. Some community members questioned whether public facilities should host the event and referenced Texas Senate Bill 12 while asking city officials for clarification about policies involving public performances and park reservations.

Screenshots shared online also show some residents contacting city leadership, including Mayor Breann Buxkemper and other council members, requesting the event be reconsidered or canceled.

Meanwhile, organizers and supporters of the event defended the gathering, saying it is intended to be family friendly, open to the public, and focused on creating an inclusive environment for attendees. Organizer Leandra Timmons stated publicly that there would be “no adult content, no vulgarity, and nothing that falls outside the standards expected of a public community event.”

Supporters of the event argued that residents have the right to attend or avoid the gathering based on personal beliefs, while opponents expressed concerns over the location being public city property.

According to statements shared online, organizers said the event was reserved as a free public park gathering and therefore did not require additional permits under existing park reservation procedures. Screenshots circulating online also referenced information from the City of Levelland website regarding pavilion reservations and public park usage guidelines.

As of Tuesday morning, city officials had not publicly announced any cancellation or changes involving the event. Discussion surrounding the gathering continued generating strong reactions across Levelland social media pages, reflecting broader statewide debates involving public events, LGBTQ gatherings, and free expression in Texas communities.
