This we recognize Master Sergeant Leroy A. Petry who displayed extraordinary courage during combat operations in Paktya Province, Afghanistan.
After being wounded while under enemy fire, Petry continued leading and protecting his fellow Rangers. When an enemy gr***de landed just feet away from his team, he acted without hesitation, picking it up and throwing it away to shield those beside him. The gr***de detonated as it left his hand, amputating his right hand and causing additional severe injuries.
Despite his wounds, Petry immediately applied a tourniquet, coordinated support by radio, and continued caring for his fellow Rangers. His selfless actions undoubtedly saved lives and reflected extraordinary bravery, sacrifice, and devotion to others. Today, we salute you.
