**Join the Greenwood County 250 Coalition for an Independence Day Celebration Honoring America's 250th Anniversary
GREENWOOD, S.C. — July 4, 2026 — Greenwood County 250 Coalition will host a special Independence Day Celebration commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Community members of all ages are invited to attend this patriotic event honoring the founding of our nation and the enduring principles of freedom and liberty.
The celebration will feature patriotic presentations, historical reflections, music, and tributes to the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Local organizations, veterans, and community leaders will join together to recognize the significance of this historic milestone in American history.
This event provides an opportunity for our community to come together in gratitude for the sacrifices made by generations of Americans and to reflect on the ideals that have guided our nation for 250 years.
Attendees will enjoy a meaningful program celebrating the spirit of independence and citizenship while honoring Greenwood County's veterans and their contributions to our nation.
The event is part of the nationwide America 250 commemoration marking two and a half centuries since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Organizers encourage families, veterans, civic groups, and residents throughout the region to participate in this historic celebration.

The 266th Anniversary of the Long Canes Massacre

The Long Canes Massacre Site is significant to the history of exploration and settlement in South Carolina and for its association with the Cherokee War of 1760-61 and the Calhoun settlement of The Long Canes. The property includes the gravestone which marks the place where twenty-three of the Long Canes settlers were killed in a massacre by the Cherokee Indians on February 1, 1760. Among those killed was Mrs. Catherine Calhoun, matriarch of the Calhoun family, who figured prominently in the settlement of upcountry South Carolina. The Long Canes Massacre can be attributed in part to a boundary dispute between the Cherokee and settlers over a parcel of land lying between Long Cane Creek and Little River. The site is located in a private secluded area, contributing to the preservation of the site’s historic integrity. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
