It’s back-to-school season here at HEFD, too!

Four of our newest firefighters had their own “first day of school” today — FF Mobeck and FF Chlopek are headed to Fire Academy while FF Miller Jr. and
FF Wilson are starting Paramedic School.

There’s a lot of learning, training, and hard work ahead, but we’re excited to watch them take the next step in their careers!

🔥🚒 Fully Involved Fire Academy is back! 🚒🔥
Last year, HEFD had a blast welcoming participants from NWSRA for our Fully Involved Fire Academy — and we’re excited to do it again!

Participants will get an up-close look at life in the fire service through fun, hands-on activities alongside Hoffman Estates firefighters.

Week 5 of Teen Fire Academy gave students the opportunity to develop two essential firefighter skills: search & rescue and forced entry.

At Station 24, students trained inside our water tower, where the upper level is designed to simulate a residential home complete with a living room and bedroom. Working in teams, they practiced search techniques, crawling low to the ground, using proper movement methods, and locating victims in a smoke-simulated environment.

They then rotated downstairs to the Forced Entry Prop, where they learned how firefighters gain access to locked buildings using a Halligan tool and striking tool. Students took turns working each position, and many even had the chance to force the door themselves!

Another great week of hands-on learning, teamwork, and building confidence in the fire service.

Weeks 3 & 4 of Teen Fire Academy kept the momentum going with hands-on training in EMS and vehicle extrication!

Week 3: EMS (with a special appearance from our Dive Team!)
Participants rotated through a variety of lifesaving skills, including:
• Advanced airway management with intubation and ventilation
• Cardiac monitor use, manual CPR, and mechanical CPR
• Patient movement using the stair chair, stretcher, and backboard
• Trauma care, including splinting, bandaging, and tourniquet application

Week 4: Vehicle Extrication
Students got a firsthand look at the tools and techniques used to safely rescue patients from vehicles, including:
• Vehicle stabilization with rescue jacks, wheel chocks, and tire deflation
• Vehicle movement using a Griphoist and airbags
• Vehicle entry with electronic cutters and spreaders
Each week builds new skills, confidence, and teamwork as these future firefighters continue to experience what the fire service is all about!

Week 2 of our Teen Fire Academy! Water and Fire night accomplished with a few stations: fire extinguishers, connecting to a hydrant, hose deployment, and engineering.

We got to finish up with a Doll House example lead by retired Lt. O'Donnell! This simulation demonstrates smoke path, fuel load, and the importance of door control. It is always one of our favorite simulations!

The fireworks display at the Northwest Fourth-Fest is a go for tonight, but will be launched early. Due to the timing of predicted weather later this evening, the fireworks show will begin at 8:45 p.m.

FIREWORKS UPDATE: July 3, 2:30 p.m.
As of now, preparations are being made for the fireworks display to go on tonight. With a chance for storms later this afternoon and into this evening, we will post additional updates about the festival schedule as the information becomes available.

The region’s largest fireworks show returns with another spectacular display TONIGHT, July 3 at 9:30 p.m. This show, presented by Groot, is visible from anywhere on the festival grounds outside the NOW Arena.
