The skies are looking gloomy today, and that is because we are expecting strong to severe thunderstorms moving through our region tonight. These storms are nothing to joke about. These storms can lead to damaging winds, with large hail, a tornado is possible, heavy rains, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. These storms will be making their way through the region, likely after 7 p.m.

To keep safe during the event of severe weather:
-Charge your phone and portable batteries in case of power outages
-Identify your safe place: away from windows, a small interior room on the lowest floor
-Bring your pets inside
-Secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and other loose items that can be blown away with strong winds
-Move your vehicles into a garage or sturdy covered area if possible. If not, move away from trees that may be knocked down by strong winds.

The Office of Emergency Management is actively monitoring the situation. We will continue to update the community with weather announcements as we receive them from the National Weather Service to ensure everyone stays safe and informed as this storm system passes through our area.

Heat Advisory & Severe Weather Announcement for Tuesday, July 14

The National Weather Service has issued two weather alerts for our area for Tuesday, July 14.

The first weather alert is Extreme Heat & High Heat Index (Tuesday 11 a.m. -8 p.m.)

Heat indices in the lower 90s to 100s are forecast, and warm overnight lows will be between 65 and 75 degrees. The SRMT Cooling Center will be open during business hours, then standby (open as needed). The SRMT Cooling Center is located at the SRMT Office for the Aging, 29 Margaret Terrance Memorial Way

Heat Safety Tips:
Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak hours, check on vulnerable neighbors, and never leave pets or children in parked vehicles

Second weather alert: Severe Storm Risk (Tuesday Evening- Tuesday Night)

The Storm Prediction Center has updated the areas along the U.S/ Canadian Border to an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 out of 5) for severe weather.

-Primary Threat: Damaging, highly disruptive thunderstorm winds.
-Additional Hazards: Large hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, localized heavy rainfall, and a low chance (5%) of flash flooding in the. A strong tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Storm Safety Tips:
Secure loose outdoor items (patio furniture, trash cans) ahead of time. Ensure your devices are fully charged, and identify a safe, interior room on the lowest floor of your home in case severe warnings are issued.

Attention community members: There is currently a power outage on St. Regis Road. Crews are working to restore power with an estimated restoration of power scheduled for around 4:30 p.m. With the current heat, we would like to also remind community members that the cooling center located at the SRMT Office of the Aging is open and on stand-by until 7 p.m.

Attention community members. The cooling center located at the SRMT Office for the Aging will be open during standard operational hours and will move to standby status from 4 PM to 7 PM until Friday. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Office of Emergency Management and Safety (OEMS) and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Operations Center are urging all community members to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Heat-Related Illness: Know the Risks
Heat exhaustion can become heat stroke, a life-threatening emergency, if not treated promptly. Recognize the signs and act quickly.

Preventive Measures:
• Stay hydrated with cold water
• Take cool showers or baths
• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
• Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat (12 PM – 8 PM)
• Avoid alcohol
• Cool your skin with water throughout the day

Power Outage Preparedness:
• Extreme heat can strain the power grid. In the event of an outage:
• Operate generators only outdoors and away from windows and doors
• Never connect a generator directly to home wiring or use a wall outlet, as it poses serious safety risks to your home and utility workers

Unauthorized Sewage Discharge Along the Raquette River

AKWESASNE — (Ohiaríha/June 26, 2026) The Environment Division and Compliance Department conducted a joint investigation into environmental concerns at three housing developments operated by the Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation in Rooseveltown.

The investigation identified a wastewater collection and treatment system serving the three developments in violation of Tribal environmental and building codes. As a result, unauthorized discharges of sewage have occurred, impacting the Raquette River.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) is actively working with the Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation to address and correct these deficiencies as quickly as possible. Protecting public health and the environment remains our top priority.

Community members are advised to avoid accessing septic system components and to refrain from entering the immediate areas along the Raquette River adjacent to the affected housing developments until further notice.

The response situation is ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

We want to provide an update regarding the Flood Recovery & Readiness Program Projects.

The Flood Recovery & Readiness Program will no longer be taking applications as of today, June 23. For those who applied for this program, the work will be conducted over the next year, weather permitting.

Tornado Watch Until 3 PM

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch in our area until 3 PM today.

Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds up to 80mph, large hail up to a half inch, and heavy rainfall. Community members are encouraged to remain aware and monitor local weather forecasts throughout the day.

If this watch is upgraded to a warning, please:
-Seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building
-Stay away from windows and exterior walls
-Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and emergency information

Office of Emergency Management and Safety will continue to monitor these conditions and provide updates as they are available.
