Dear EMS & Healthcare Community,

A new resource from ADHS aims to help everyone better understand the monkeypox outbreak, including information for Arizona
healthcare and EMS providers.

The website at azhealth.gov/monkeypox is organized around four areas:

Know: Monkeypox is spread through very close, often intimate, contact. The site has an infographic explaining activities that put people at high risk for monkeypox. It also explains that monkeypox isn’t spread through brief conversations or walking past an infected person, so the risk from normal activities such as shopping, using a public restroom, or going to a restaurant is quite low.
Prevent: Vaccines are available to those at high risk or who have been exposed to monkeypox. Contact your local health department for more information. Residents of Maricopa County or Pima County interested in vaccination can fill out their vaccine interest forms. EMS and healthcare providers can protect themselves by adhering to enhanced precautions to include gloves, masks, gowns, and eye protection during patient encounters.
Identify: Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, respiratory symptoms (e.g., sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough), and rash (may be located on any part of the body including on or near the ge****ls). Testing is available in Arizona. Contact your health care provider to arrange testing.
Treat: Medication is available and may be recommended by your doctor.
As of August 13, Arizona had 186 reported cases of monkeypox, with most of those occurring in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. This rare viral infection, which had been rarely seen in people who hadn’t traveled to central and west Africa, has been reported since May across multiple countries that normally don’t report cases. It is rarely life-threatening but can cause painful rash and lesions.

Please visit azhealth.gov/monkeypox for additional information, including resources for healthcare providers.

It’s time for your Covid booster!

People, the evidence shows our immunity from Covid-19 obtained from the vaccinations is or has waned a great deal.

How do we know this? Look at the how the infection rate plunged to almost nothing when people began getting vaccinated. The rate went from a peak 7 day average of 180,000 down to under 15,000. The vaccine worked!

Then the Delta variant comes into play, and since it is considerably more infectious (x2), it effected even more of those that were unvaccinated at an alarming rate. Now today, we see the infection rate for those that are vaccinated is now climbing every day. This shows us that our protection is going away.

The hospitals are full. The ER’s are full with no place to send their patients, and this is getting worse by the day.

Navajo County is one of two counties with the current highest infection rates in Arizona, according to the statistics from the Mayo Clinic.

How do you help fix all this? Get the booster! If you have had the Moderna ,Pfizer or J&J vaccine, you are now due.

440 million people have received the vaccines. Very few serious side effects. The normal side effects such as muscle aches, fever, soreness at the injection site are all compatible with other available vaccines.

Norovirus, that really nasty bug that causes GI problems like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, is making the rounds. It is HIGHLY contagious. Washing your hands very often is your best defense if you have to go out in public. Hand gels may not be as effective. Your mask can help you in that it helps prevent you from touching your mouth whike you are wearing it. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!

If you get sick with this virus stay home! Drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Stay away from family members and the kitchen. Use one restroom if possible that no one else has to use and disinfect often.

Stay home at least one day AFTER your symptoms subside, you likely continue to be contagious the day after you begin feeling better.

11/15/2020

Holbrook EMS encourages everyone to stay home, wear your masks when in close proximity to others or indoors, and wash/disinfect your hands often.

Covid-19 is a serious illness. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is like the flu. It is not.
