Holbrook, formerly known as Horsehead Crossing, was founded in 1881 when the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad arrived and named the town after the chief engineer, Henry R. In the 1880s, the frontiersmen were the cowboys, cattle ranchers, and railroaders who made Holbrook the center of ranch country. Commodore Perry Owens, local sheriff, is credited with bringing law to the town in 1887 in a famous sh

ootout with cattle rustlers at the Blevins House. That historic house still stands, as does the Bucket of Blood Saloon, where many a cowboy refreshed himself. The majestic 1898 courthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places, is the centerpiece of the town. On August 15, 1930, Charles Osborne was the first Night Marshal for the Town of Holbrook. Holbrook had various Day and Night Marshals through out the years until June 30, 1939 when a Chief of Police positioned was created. On June 30, 1939 Lafe Hatch, former Navajo County Sheriff, was named Chief of Police by the Holbrook Town Council. Walter Martin and Tony Ortega were named as officers to work with Hatch. Each received a salary of $125 per month. Holbrook Police Department was created. We police a diverse population of 5,100 people whom we are proud to serve.

***FIRE INCIDENT***I-40 MILE POST 285, WESTBOUND ON RAMP**

There is currently a fire incident on the westbound on ramp at the 285 interchange in Holbrook.

Please avoid the area and use the 286 or 289 interchange for westbound traffic.

Holbrook PD and Holbrrook Fire are on scene. The westbound on-ramp is closed at this time until the scene is cleared. There is no estimated ETA for opening.

The Holbrook Police Department was proud to take part in this year’s Interactive Workforce Expo, hosted by Grow Arizona. Chief Christensen, Lieutenant Koon, Volunteer Stuart, and our administrative staff spent the day connecting with students and sharing what it takes to build a future in law enforcement.

Students received our High School Law Enforcement Career Prep Plan along with the Arizona POST Minimum Qualifications for Appointment — helping them see the real path to the badge.

For a hands-on — and highly entertaining — experience, students took part in an impairment awareness activity, wearing special goggles while testing their aim in a game of co****le. It was a fun and eye-opening way to demonstrate how alcohol can distort balance, depth perception, and coordination.

We had a great time building relationships and investing in our community’s future. Thank you to Grow Arizona for organizing such an impactful event — and to Holbrook High School for being incredible hosts. We’re always grateful for opportunities like this to connect with our youth and spark interest in public service. The future of law enforcement starts with conversations like these. 🚓
