A little "THROW BACK THURSDAY" in the City of Holden. Pictured here is progress on a project that began on the drawing board in 1977 and was completed in late 1979.

The project is the construction of the Holden drinking water reservoir. The scope of this project required the purchase of 600 acres of land northwest of Holden, the construction of a 385 acre lake, the construction of a raw water pumping station, and five miles of 8" raw water line to deliver the water to the old water treatment plant located where the Holden Water Departments office is now.

The first picture shows Holden Water Superintendent Ralph Stansberry visiting with the construction contractor Bill Gibson of Gibson and Bowles Construction and the project engineer Gary Lee of E.T. Archer Engineering. The two colored pictures show construction of the primary spillway, first on the lake side of the dam, and the outfall below the dam.

Hats off to Holden's Mayor and City Council Members along with our Johnson County Commissioners. It was a wise decision on behalf of the citizens of Holden when the Mayor and council dedicated $405,000 of an American Rescue Plan Act grant, the city is receiving, as local financial leveraging towards an application for Missouri ARPA grant funds to the amount of $2,909,300. The moneys will be used for badly needed repairs and improvements to Holden's drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Equal to this progressive decision by the Mayor and Council, the Commissioners of Johnson County have shown good faith in our community by matching our local contribution in the Missouri application giving us a total local financial leverage of $810,000, or nearly 28% of the total cost for the projects. This sends a clear picture of our community's dedication to improve our infrastructures in Holden, Missouri.

Throw-Back-Thursday - The first week of May each year is "National Clean Water for People Week". Once upon a time, the Holden Optimist Club, the Holden Board of Public Works, and O&M Enterprises would join together each year at this time to educate, spread awareness, and enjoy our blessings of clean water for people.
The week would begin with a proclamation issued by our Mayor recognizing Clean Water for People Week. Activities included a poster contest at the elementary school with the theme of "clean water for People". One of the prizes for the talented winner was a season pass to the Holden Swimming Pool. At the end of the week, simultaneously, the Holden Optimist Club would host a fishing derby for the area youth, with hordes of wonderful prizes. They gave away fishing poles, tackle boxes, fishing tackle, bait buckets, and much more. Sometimes there would be over 60 participants. The BPW and O&M Enterprises would hold and open house at the waterworks, with entertainment, guest speakers, and a “hog roast” with all the fixin’s. We would feed out three whole hogs during this event each year. This was an annual tradition for 15 years.
Here are a few memories of those events. Some of those in the photos are no longer with us, but they are always remembered. I will be thinking of them through this Easter Holiday.
