The Holden Fire Department offers free car seat checks to all Holden residents and visitors. Through this program we aim to promote safety for our youngest riders and minimize injury risk if an accident occurs. In some instances, families in need may be eligible for a free car-seat or car seat replacement.

The members of the Holden Fire Department would like to congratulate FF Thomas Kokernak and FF Tanyon Ventres on their graduation from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Call/Volunteer Recruit program - Class #126.

According to the Department of Fire Services, "Graduates have completed 240 hours of training on nights and weekends. Upon successful completion of this program, all students have met the national standards of NFPA 1010, Standard
for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications".

The Martin H. McNamara Outstanding Student Award was presented to Firefighter Thomas Kokernak. The award is named for Martin “Marty” McNamara V, a call firefighter with the Lancaster Fire Department who lost his life in the line of duty in 2003 while battling a fire in a multifamily home. It is presented to one recruit in each graduating call/volunteer training class and recognizes their academic and practical skills, testing, and evaluations over the course of the program.

Congratulations to both on a milestone achievement and we look forward to working with you as you embark on your career.

Crews worked hard in June, ensuring that our residents and visitors received top-tier service when we were needed. With six months of the year already behind us, we are on target for another busy year, with 1,475 calls responded to in the first six months.

The Holden Fire Department urges residents and visitors to celebrate this Independence Day weekend responsibly.

As a reminder, under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, Section 39, private individuals may not possess, use, sell, transport, ignite, or discharge fireworks unless specifically authorized by law. This includes fireworks that may have been purchased legally in another state and brought into Massachusetts.

Massachusetts law applies to common consumer fireworks, including firecrackers, sparklers, rockets, Roman candles, fountains, mines, wheels, and similar devices designed to create a visible or audible effect. Illegal fireworks may be seized, and violations may result in fines or other enforcement action.

The only lawful fireworks displays in Massachusetts are properly permitted and supervised public displays conducted by authorized professionals. Fireworks create serious risks for residents, neighboring properties, pets, veterans, and emergency responders. They can cause fires, burn injuries, property damage, and unnecessary emergency responses, particularly during dry weather conditions.

Residents are asked to help keep our neighborhoods safe by refraining from possessing, igniting, or discharging fireworks.

Cooling Center Opening – Wednesday, July 1, 2026
Due to forecasted excessive heat and humidity, the Town of Holden will open a Cooling Center to help residents stay safe and comfortable.

Location: Holden Senior Center

Date: Wednesday, July 1, 2026- Friday, July 3, 2026

Time: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday; 1:00PM-7:00 PM Friday

Address: 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA

All residents are welcome to seek relief from the extreme heat.

Heat Safety Tips:
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
• Stay indoors: Remain in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
• Limit outdoor activity: Take breaks in the shade and wear light-colored, breathable clothing.
• Never leave children or pets in vehicles: Temperatures inside a car can become deadly in minutes.
• Check on others: Reach out to elderly neighbors, young children, and those with chronic health issues or no air conditioning.
Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness:
Heat Exhaustion:

• Heavy sweating
• Weakness
• Pale or clammy skin
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fainting
Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency):

• Body temperature of 103°F or higher
• Hot, red, dry or damp skin
• Rapid pulse
• Confusion or unconsciousness
Call 911 immediately if you suspect heat stroke.

Please take precautions and help keep each other safe.

Even small fireworks can cause serious injuries. In 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated 1,700 emergency room-treated injuries involving sparklers alone.

Fireworks can cause burns, fires, property damage, and unnecessary emergency responses.

In Massachusetts, private fireworks use is illegal. Please celebrate safely and leave fireworks to the professionals.

Holden firefighters train in between calls to stay ready for the community.

On-duty training allows our members to practice critical skills, review equipment, and prepare for the wide range of emergencies they may be called to handle. Each drill, from hose operations and hydrant work to SCBA practice and hands-on scenarios, enhances safety, teamwork, and response readiness.

This daily commitment to preparation helps ensure our firefighters are ready when Holden needs them.

Protect Your Brain. Wear Your Helmet.

As summer gets underway and more people are out riding bikes and e-bikes, the Holden Fire Department wants to remind everyone that helmets save lives.
According to the CDC, hundreds of thousands of bicycle-related injuries are treated in emergency departments each year, with traumatic brain injuries being among the most serious. Studies show that wearing a properly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by up to 60%.

Before every ride:
✅ Wear a properly fitted helmet
✅ Buckle it correctly
✅ Replace it after any crash

A concussion can happen in seconds, but the effects can last a lifetime.

You can replace a helmet. You cannot replace your brain.
