Holladay School promotes reading by partnering with Vick Insurance with the Read to Ride Program! Vick Insurance gave away bikes, scooters, and hoverboards to lucky readers! Thanks! Mrs. Amy and Mrs. Denise had to take a pie in the face as students met their school reading goal of 20,000,000 words! Since students exceeded the goal by 500,000 words, Mrs. Amy kissed a goat and Mrs. Denise snuggled a snake! Special thanks to Ranger Josh for bringing the snake! Finally, lucky readers from each class got to try to dunk Coach Baker and Miss Karlie in the dunking tank! Reading is fun!!!

We get asked this question all the time and the answer tells a beautiful story of Appalachian tradition.

Imagine walking through a mountain festival and hearing the sound of fiddles, banjos, and guitars filling the air. You turn the corner and see dancers, but not everyone is dancing the same way.

You may first notice a group performing ๐™˜๐™ก๐™ค๐™œ๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, a high-energy style often danced in teams with choreographed routines and synchronized movements. Clogging tends to be more performance-driven and can include big visual elements like ๐™๐™ž๐™œ๐™ ๐™ ๐™ž๐™˜๐™ ๐™จ, ๐™˜๐™ก๐™ค๐™œ๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ, ๐™–๐™ง๐™ข ๐™ข๐™ค๐™ซ๐™š๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™จ, ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™˜๐™ž๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ, and crowd-favorite steps like ๐™˜๐™๐™ช๐™œ๐™จ that really bring excitement to the stage. Itโ€™s powerful, entertaining, and has evolved into a style many audiences recognize today.

Then you might see someone ๐™›๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ๐™›๐™ค๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, and it feels completely different. Flatfooting is deeply traditional and often more improvisational. Dancers stay ๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™œ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™, keeping their feet close to the floor while creating smooth, intricate rhythms that blend with old-time mountain music. Itโ€™s less about flashy movements and more about becoming part of the music, almost like your feet are another instrument in the band.

And then thereโ€™s ๐™—๐™ช๐™˜๐™  ๐™™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, a traditional solo style full of personality, rhythm, and improvisation. Buck dancers often add their own unique flair through ๐™ฆ๐™ช๐™ž๐™˜๐™  ๐™›๐™ค๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ , ๐™จ๐™ฎ๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™ง๐™๐™ฎ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ข๐™จ, and expressive movement that showcases individual style while honoring generations of Appalachian tradition.

Though each style looks and feels different, they all share the same roots, community, storytelling, music, and preserving Appalachian heritage. โค๏ธ
