If you see anything going into a stormwater drain that isn't completely made up of stormwater or uncontaminated groundwater, that is an illicit discharge! The most common warning signs of illicit discharges are dry-weather flow, suds, sewage, cloudiness, color, or an oil-like sheen.

You can report a suspected illicit discharge anonymously to the Pollution Emergency Alerting System (PEAS) hotline at: 800-292-4706. Remember, only rain down the drain!

Anything left on the land can be washed away into storm drains when it rains, even things we might not know are a problem, like grass clippings and leaf litter. Yard waste can cause a variety of issues, from blocked drains that increase street flooding to negatively impacting water quality.

As organic material like grass clippings breaks down, it uses up oxygen in the water and can create conditions that lead to algal blooms and die-offs for aquatic plants and animals. In addition, these plants release excess nutrients as they decay, which increases water quality issues.

Easy steps like blowing or sweeping your grass clippings back onto the lawn, composting or bagging yard waste, and removing piles of leaves from a storm drain can make a huge difference in supporting our waterways!
