Contract negotiations may be tough right now, but our priorities have always been clear. While Township leaders drag out the bargaining process, Local 3544 is putting our resources and fundraising dollars back into our community.

We are honored to help fund this memorial to help recognize and pay tribute to the brothers and sisters who paved the way before us. Politics will always come and go, but our dedication to this township and our history is unconditional.

Our new Firefighter Memorial is really starting to take shape. Bridgewater Landscaping & Lawn is here today grading the top soil, planting tree’s, and continuing to work to on the landscaping around the memorial. This project could not have been possible without businesses like this donating material, labor, and time to help make this project possible. We can not wait to host our Annual Firefighter Memorial at Station 52 (1534 S. Crissey Rd.) on Saturday October 10th at Noon!

As Springfield Township firefighters we are legally not allowed to strike—and we wouldn't want to. Our commitment to answering your 911 calls without interruption is non-negotiable. Last year Springfield Township Fire and Rescue answered over 5,000 calls for service.

Because striking is not an option, Ohio law provides a neutral path forward: Binding Arbitration. This process brings in an independent third party to objectively evaluate regional pay, township resources, and department needs.

This neutral review is vital, especially when it comes to keeping our firefighters working for Springfield Township Fire & Rescue. In recent discussions, administration suggested personnel look into applying to other departments, such as Sylvania Township if they seek higher competitive pay, noting our workload shouldn't necessarily warrant higher wages.

While we know these comments were likely made in the heat of discussions, encouraging trained staff to seek opportunities elsewhere makes retention more challenging and impacts long-term department stability.

Official township materials for past levies explicitly cited "Investments in Recruiting and Retention" and "the ability to pay competitive salaries on an ongoing basis" as key priorities. We simply want to see
those goals fully realized for our frontline staff.

Binding arbitration is a standard, neutral process where an independent third party can evaluate regional wage data, local tax resources, and operational needs to reach a fair, balanced outcome, hopefully ensuring our firefighters are able to stay right here working for a department they love.

Keeping seasoned personnel on our rigs means having first responders who know our layout, know our community members, and have spent years training alongside their crewmates. When experienced people leave, our community doesn't just lose an employee—we lose institutional knowledge and daily stability.

Retaining experienced personnel ensures that when you call 911, the person arriving at your door is seasoned, prepared, and ready for whatever scenario unfolds

Our goal is simply open communication with the residents we serve every day. When Springfield Township voters pass tax levies, the shared vision is to invest in public safety, maintain strong response times, and retain the dedicated firefighters and paramedics who serve our community. When looking at local benchmarks for over a decade, our members have been hopeful and have been promised that contract updates would gradually bring frontline compensation closer to surrounding communities.

However, a broad look at regional data shows a growing gap:

• Our Paramedic/Firefighters earn 80% of the regional average of $82,000. Neighboring departments**—including ALL but 1 with lower call volumes —range between 102% to 118% of the area average per
year.

When wages lag significantly behind neighboring areas, it becomes difficult to attract new recruits and retain our trained personnel. Bringing frontline compensation in line with regional benchmarks isn't just about pay—it’s about fulfilling the intent of the community's tax dollars to maintain a competitive competent department.

We want to share an important update about our department. Since January 2026, your local firefighters and paramedics have been working without a collective bargaining agreement.

Our goal in sharing this is open communication. As contract negotiations continue, our focus remains on providing the highest level of service while ensuring Springfield Township remains a strong, stable department for years to come. Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing a closer look at what goes into maintaining our department and why retaining experienced first responders is so vital to public safety.
