Meet the K9s of Springfield Township Fire & Rescue
We are proud to share some incredible news regarding our specialized K9 unit. Please join us in celebrating a major milestone for one of our veteran searchers and welcoming a new face to the team.
At 10.5 years young, K9 Darwin has officially completed his re-certification. Darwin has spent years serving our community, and his experience is an invaluable asset to our department. Watching a senior dog continue to work with such drive and precision is a testament to the bond between a dog and their handler. Darwin has been instrumental on numerous searches throughout the community during his years of service.
We are also excited to announce that K9 Mando has earned his initial certification.
He is still a big puppy and has a lot of learning to do. Mando has undergone rigorous training to meet the high standards required for active service, and he is ready to hit the ground running alongside Darwin.
Both Darwin and Mando are certified Human Remains Detection (HRD) dogs, often referred to as cadaver dogs. While we always hope for the best possible outcome in any search, these K9s provide a vital service during some of our most difficult missions.
Their specialized training allows them to locate scent in environments where human senses and technology often fall short. By assisting in these recoveries, Darwin and Mando help provide answers and closure to families during their most challenging moments, ensuring that no one is left behind.
These certifications are held through the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA), a world-class organization that ensures K9 teams meet strict professional standards for accuracy and reliability.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of their handler, Shelbie Flegal. Shelbie has committed the last 10 years to training and handling these high-drive dogs, ensuring they are always prepared to answer the call when our community needs them most.
Help us congratulate Shelbie, Darwin, and Mando on their hard work and dedication to public safety!
