On November 3rd of 2020, Toledo voters passed Issue 4, a TEMPORARY 0.025% tax levy dedicated to the city's road repair program. Later, in March of 2024, Toledo voters approved a renewal of the temporary 0.025% tax levy.
Issue 4 was a big deal because Toledo voters took a chance to trust the city government with a tax increase. Before Issue 4 passed in November 2020, Toledoans had rejected a broader tax increase proposal (Issue 1) that included road repair.
Toledoans have long been skeptical of the big promises that come along with tax increases. What we've just experienced from Toledo City Council is a great example of why. What the Lucas County Democrats on City Council did was a brazenly disrespectful act against Toledo citizens.
Aren't we in charge of making the decisions on how much to spend fixing our roads? Members of Council who voted for this increase did so without the consent of the governed. Not only did they take more money from us, they disrespected and ignored our voices.
This is actually how KINGS act.
