Holland VFD and Bell County Sheriff Office received a 911 call for a citizen who was stuck in a creek bed trying to retrieve a lost calf off Darrs Creek Road. A nearby neighbor that came to assist became stuck in the creek bed as well trying to assist. Personnel from both agencies assisted with getting the individuals out of the creek bottom and back up to safety. Then the focus turn to the calf that weight 400 to 500 lbs who spent most of the night stuck and exhausted and was unable to get up. With assistance from personnel from a large animal rescue team brought the calf back up as well. All personnel cleared the scene safe and sound.

Tonight we honor the passing of Chief Benner (556) with an es**rt to funeral home. We remember him by lightning the water tower red. Funeral arrangements are still being planned and announced when everything is finalized.

EXTREME FIRE DANGER: ONE SPARK CAN START A GRASS FIRE

Conditions across the Central Texas area are extremely dry. A grass fire this past week spread dangerously close to nearby buildings and homes.

Please use extra caution with any activity that can produce heat or sparks:

- Avoid shredding or mowing during the hottest part of the day. If it must be done, work early in the morning when temperatures are lower and humidity is higher.

- Postpone outdoor welding, grinding and cutting whenever possible. Clear away dry vegetation and keep water and a fire extinguisher nearby.

- Secure trailer chains so they cannot drag on the roadway and create sparks.

- Inspect tires, wheel bearings and brakes before traveling. A blown tire, failed bearing or overheated brake can ignite dry grass along the roadway.

- Never park a hot vehicle or equipment over tall, dry grass.

- Never throw ci******es out the window.

Stop immediately if you see smoke, sparks or signs of overheating.

Keep a phone nearby and call 911 immediately if a fire starts. Do not delay.

In these conditions, a small spark can become a fast-moving grass fire within minutes. Please help us protect our homes, land, livestock and first responders.
