Our June #WISEWOMEN Shout-out goes to Donna Gority. While most of you probably know Donna in some capacity for her extensive work in our community; WISE Women knows her for her efforts from their beginnings. Donna played a pivotal role in moving from the YWCA to the virtual organization now known as WISE Women. As the YWCA Board President during this transition, Donna believed that the organization would continue to thrive and make a difference in our community. And it has. Today she continues to contribute as a board member and active member of our scholarship, grants, tribute and social media committees. I am sure some of you will run into Donna this month - give her a standing O from us!!

'It's really a model for living': Why jazz is as relevant as ever on International Jazz Day

A great read as we lead up to International Jazz Day tomorrow.

"International Jazz Day was launched in 2011 by Herbie Hancock, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

"Herbie realized that in America jazz is being swept under the carpet unless you're an aficionado, you're an educator or you're in school playing this music," Jones says. "

International Jazz Day returns to live performances in 2021, a year in which the music's role in civil rights movements is especially relevant.

For Women's Month: https://youtu.be/XGQYoA83JR0 This is to honor women, be it Woman’s Day, Month, etc. The lyrics don’t indicate feminism, but rather, an independent woman who can make her own choices (in this case, about whether to stay or leave a relationship). It was this independence that became the fuel for my video as it lead to feminism and thus, independent women. So whether those pictures are celebrities, participating in a movement, are on athletic teams, simply working, have made history, or pictured in some other way, they should be symbolizing the power of the woman! All pictures used were researched 1985 simply because that’s the year of the song. All images used were displayed first in their search engine results. I don’t discriminate or pick favorites, nor do I understand how and why images are displayed first (all the hi-tech software programming stuff). The keywords, besides 1985, were both “power of women” and “feminism”. So if an image was used, maybe it was better “tagged” on their respective websites… or whatever. The exception that was excluded were fashion models. I don’t see how someone just getting their picture taken, to promote clothing sales, symbolizes independence. I know, a song is only so long, and can only display so many pictures, but it’s a great depiction of what I wanted to communicate… that women do indeed contribute to society! So besides honoring women, let’s take a trip both, musically and visually, back to 1985!
