According to the California Vehicle Code (CVC), all OHVs must be equipped with an exhaust or muffler system that sufficiently limits the vehicle’s sound to a specified level.

All OHVs (including ROVs, dirt bikes, and ATVs) manufactured after 1998 must be at or below 96 decibels when tested from 20 inches away at an engine RPM determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Older competition vehicles may have a higher limit depending on where the vehicle is being operated.

If you're curious about your sound level, we are planning a free sound test day in the Upper Ranch in June, so stay tuned! If you have any questions about sound law, please call the kiosk at (831) 637-3874.
