At last night’s annual meeting, President Sheila Adams presented the Holliston Historical Society’s annual awards. Each award is given to recognize the selfless and continual support each recipient gives to our Society. These community-builders are a vital piece of what grows Holliston. Sarah Amtower received the Member of the Year. David Grosjean received the President’s Award. John and Carol Paltrineri received the John Mason Batchelder Award for Excellence. Congratulations to our recipients! We appreciate and honor you.

Thank you to our long-time friends at HCAT for covering our Train Show! Holliston Hub has covered town events, including those at the Holliston Historical Society, for decades. Their commitment to the community has been unwavering. As they face uncertain times, we hope you will join us in showing HCAT the same love and support they have always given our town.

This beautiful pocket in the collection dates to 1790 and was made by Keziah Lovell. Her initials are cross-stitched near the bottom of the pocket in brown thread, possibly silk. The pocket is made of linen that has been beautifully crewel embroidered with wool in shades of light and dark blue. The edges of the pocket and the slit are bound in printed cottons which might have been scraps from another sewing project. There are remnants of the tapes which were used to tie the pocket around the waist.
Ironically, this beautiful work would likely never be seen, as women’s pockets were worn underneath their skirts, and were accessed by slits in the sides of the skirts. Women’s clothing in the 17th, 18th, and part of the 19th century did not have pockets stitched in their clothing, so pockets like this were how women carried their valuables and personal items.

This rocking horse may have been under a lucky child’s Christmas tree at some point in the past. It comes complete with its saddle and stirrups, and has a real horsehair tail. It will be under the tree at the Holliston Historical Society during the Holiday Stroll on November 29th!
Stop by the Asa Whiting House from 12-4 to see this rocking horse and some other items children in the past may have received for Christmas. Hot cider and refreshments will be served, and our Treasure Shop will be open. Santa will be stopping in around noon!
