In a collaborative effort with the Swansboro Fire Department protecting our community means caring for both our two-legged and four-legged family members.

The Shelby Program was created to provide emergency veterinary assistance for animals rescued during fires and other emergency incidents. When pets survive a crisis, they often need immediate medical care. This fund helps ensure those life-saving treatments are available when they are needed most.

We were just recently provided the opportunity to offer this program to a citizen of Holly Ridge.

The Shelby Program is 100% donation-based, and every contribution goes toward helping animals affected by emergency situations.

If you would like to support this important cause, donations can be made online through the Town of Swansboro website by selecting “Donations” and choosing “Emergency Vet Fund,” or by mailing a check payable to Swansboro Town Hall.

Onslow County will lift the burn ban effective at 8:00 AM on Sunday, May 3, in conjunction with the lifting of the North Carolina Forest Service statewide burn ban. Residents are still encouraged to practice safe burning and keep a water source, such as a garden hose, nearby.

Fire responses for outside fires are increasing in Onslow County. Dry weather, heat, wind, and drought conditions have raised the risk of wildfires. Because of this, the burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.

These conditions create a serious fire hazard. To protect life, property, and natural resources, all open burning is prohibited. This includes yard debris, land clearing, and any non-essential outdoor burning.

We will continue to monitor conditions and work with state and local partners. The burn ban will be reviewed as conditions improve, and updates will be shared as soon as it is safe to lift it.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to keep Onslow County and surrounding communities safe.

Effective 8AM Sunday, March 29, 2026 Onslow County will implement a County Burn Ban until further notice due to increased fire risk. The burn ban for Onslow County does not allow for any open burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling until conditions improve.

The North Carolina Forest Service issued a statewide burn ban effective 6PM March 28, 2026 but it does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. Onslow County implemented its local burn ban in cooperation with the State of North Carolina to reduce the risk of wildfires starting and spreading.

Open burning includes burning leaves, branches, or other plant material. In all cases burning trash, lumber, tires, newspaper, plastics, or other nonnegative material is illegal. The only exception to the County wide burn ban is for the use of outdoor cooking and warmth purposes.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
