The NC Division of Emergency Management, in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is releasing updated flood insurance rate maps for Wake County. The maps show what properties could flood during heavy rain events, and this may affect insurance rates for those properties.

Only a handful of homes in Holly Springs are affected by the updated maps, which last were updated in 2006. The Town is reviewing the maps to identify the properties affected by this update and notifying these property owners by mail. The preliminary floodplain maps are available for review online.

A regional meeting primarily for affected property owners throughout southwest Wake County is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, 5-7 p.m. at the Holly Springs Cultural Center at 300 West Ballentine St. Representatives from the state, county, and Holly Springs and neighboring towns will be available to help attendees locate their properties on the maps and discuss how the maps relate to flood insurance and floodplain management.

The maps will continue to be updated routinely by the state and federal government and are one of the tools the Town uses to protect homeowners and the environment as the Town does not allow residential development in the floodplain.

Be stormwater wise with floodplain rules. Do you have an area in your yard next to a stream or channel that floods during a rain event? It may be a floodplain on your property. All streams and channels have a floodplain that will become active during and/or after certain rain events. Did you know that it’s illegal to build structures or fill in the floodplain? For questions about these areas and what you can do in them, please contact the Stormwater Hotline at (919) 567-4027 or at [email protected] and remember: clean water begins with you and me!

Good information and reminders about leaf collection are available on our website at http://www.hollyspringsnc.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=428. Please pile leaves away from storm drains and ditches, preferably at the edge of the yard and out of the street. Debris that clogs storm drains can cause streets to flood. Remember, what goes down storm drains flows to our water supplies.

We’re heading into the busy season for leaf collection. For a few friendly reminders, please click here: http://www.hollyspringsnc.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=428.

tip: Be stormwater-wise with leaf collection. Place leaves at the edge of your yard and not in the street for pickup. Keep them away from storm drains, ditches and streams. Leaves and other debris can block drainage ways and cause roads to flood. When using a leaf blower, please take care not to blow leaves and debris into the storm drain.

What do you think about stormwater and the local environment?
Take an anonymous survey at www.hollyspringsnc.us/stormwatersurvey and let us know! Every couple years, the Town conducts an anonymous survey to gauge public awareness about stormwater and environmental issues. The survey helps us assess trends in our residents’ knowledge and behavior so we can improve our Stormwater Management Program.

This is the third anonymous survey in a continuing effort to assist Town staff in gauging public awareness about stormwater and environmental issues. You may recognize some of the questions and themes, as the Town is trying to assess trends in citizen knowledge and behavior; you may also notice a ne…

We're thrilled that the new Coastal Plain League's Holly Springs team will be known as the Salamanders. Holly Springs is home to the Eastern Tiger Salamander, which is found in only six of the state's 100 counties. The salamanders live in wet areas: another reason to keep Holly Springs streams clean!

Coastal Plain League baseball officials announced at a press conference on Thursday that the expansion collegiate baseball team they’re launching in Holly Springs will be known as the Salamanders.
