The NC Division of Emergency Management, in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is releasing updated flood insurance rate maps for Wake County. The maps show what properties could flood during heavy rain events, and this may affect insurance rates for those properties.
Only a handful of homes in Holly Springs are affected by the updated maps, which last were updated in 2006. The Town is reviewing the maps to identify the properties affected by this update and notifying these property owners by mail. The preliminary floodplain maps are available for review online.
A regional meeting primarily for affected property owners throughout southwest Wake County is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, 5-7 p.m. at the Holly Springs Cultural Center at 300 West Ballentine St. Representatives from the state, county, and Holly Springs and neighboring towns will be available to help attendees locate their properties on the maps and discuss how the maps relate to flood insurance and floodplain management.
The maps will continue to be updated routinely by the state and federal government and are one of the tools the Town uses to protect homeowners and the environment as the Town does not allow residential development in the floodplain.
