Great Lakes National Cemetery

Great Lakes National Cemetery Honoring Veterans and their eligible family members with final resting places in National Shrines. Mr.

Great Lakes National Cemetery is the second national cemetery built in Michigan and the 122nd in the national cemetery system. Great Lakes National Cemetery is located approximately 50 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, in Holly Township, Oakland County. The cemetery borders Fagan Lake, and is located on a portion of a land grant from the Federal Government to Terrance Fagan in 1836. Historicall

y, the property served as farmland until it was acquired by the National Cemetery Administration in 2002. In the 20th century, the property was purchased by Bryson Dexter Horton, a Spanish-American War veteran-turned-industrialist who invented the "Square D" switch. Horton's invention dramatically improved electrical safety, by encasing the switch in steel and protecting users from the live electrical current. Horton constructed a small house on the property in 1927, and reportedly entertained such preeminent locals as Henry and Edsel Ford, who both hunted and fished there. Great Lakes National Cemetery was established in 2005, and the first burial took place on October 17 of that year.

The staff of the Great Lakes National Cemetery want to wish everyone a peaceful Memorial Day. We are honored to work everyday on these hallowed grounds, looking after our Veterans and their families. Please take a moment to remember YOUR Veteran today and all of the sacrifices they and their families made, whether in peacetime, or war. As the words of the song say, "All gave some, some gave all". This signifies what today is truly about, and why we have the freedoms today which so many throughout the world lack.
Please enjoy your day, and if you get the chance to visit the cemetery, it looks amazing.

Welcome to our weekend of events honoring and remembering the brave men and women laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery. We are grateful to have each of you join us as we come together in reflection, unity, and appreciation for the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes and their families. Throughout this special weekend, may we share in fellowship, remembrance, and pride as we celebrate the lives and legacies of those who served our country with honor.

We here at the Great Lakes National Cemetery hope that everyone is enjoying this amazing weather today. Please remember that the wildlife that lives here is...wild. The Sandhill Cranes are beautiful creatures, but they have more than a little bit of attitude (and very sharp beaks). For your own safety, do not approach them, ESPECIALLY if they have colts with them (yes, this is the actual name for juvenile Sandhill Cranes). We have quite a few pairs who have chosen us to be their home this year and we everyone to be safe, and enjoy your visits here.

Yesterday, the Great Lakes National Cemetery was proud to welcome students and staff from the Waterbrook Christian Academy to our cemetery. The students were given a tour of our facility, and had the opportunity to visit the gravesites of a few of our Veteran's and hear their stories. They then volunteered for a couple of hours helping to beautify our shrine. A few students and staff were able to visit the graves of family members. This is the third year the school has come out here and each time it is amazing to see the spark in the student's eyes as they learn a little bit more about the cost of freedom.

Yesterday at our employee meeting, two of our employees were recognized for their years of service. Danielle Lidstrand received her 5 year award, and Micheal Webster received his 10 year award. It's hard to believe that especially Danielle has already been here that long, but we here at the Great Lakes National Cemetery are fortunate that many of our employees are all here "for the long haul". The job we do here, for us, goes far beyond just earning a paycheck, if you ask them, our employees are committed to our families and Veterans, and to the job of helping them through some of the toughest times. ❤️

Today, the Great Lakes National Cemetery was honored by a visit from the Deputy Director for operations along with some of her staff from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency who were in Michigan in order to meet with families of Veterans who are still considered missing in action. The DPAA's mission is "Provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and the nation." GLNC currently has six Veterans who have been identified through their agencies work and are now interred here. We also have a number of others still listed as missing in action who are memorialized at our cemetery. It was an honor to take them around our cemetery, and explain how this piece of the identification and repatriation of our missing fits together with their recovery and identification programs. Assistant Director Sayles stated it perfectly when he said "How fortunate are we to be able to help honor our Brothers and Sisters" The DPAA staff remembered working on each of our Veterans from the program and were able to tell a few more stories to add to their memory, along with placing roses on each of their gravesites. Michigan welcomed our visitors (from Hawaii) in typical fashion, but as we told them, "at least it isn't snowing today".

It's a beautiful day (finally) to come and visit the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

If while you're driving throughout the cemetery, please try to avoid all of the turtles which are in the middle of their hatching stage as they cross the road.

If you are coming out Monday through Friday during working hours and you have mobility issues, please stop into the administration building and we can arrange for one of our staff members to meet you with a golf cart to help make it easier for you to visit the gravesite of your loved one.

Please enjoy this weather, and be safe!

Very early this morning, the twilight was just beginning to illuminate the Great Lakes National Cemetery. The sights and smells of Spring are finally taking hold and mowing season has begun. Please remember that if you visit us in the near future, our interment sections are still VERY wet (so no stiletto heals please).

We have sprayed a cleaning agent on the headstones in Section 7. This has been known to turn the marker an orange color. This is temporary and should subside in a matter of 24-48 hours. At which point the markers should be brighter and more vibrant than they were prior to this application. Thank you for your understanding.
