The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad announces with regret the passing of Life Member and Past President John Gatton Sr. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. John devoted many years to serving his community and held the position of HVRS President from 1988 to 1991, 1992 to 1994, and 1999 to 2002.

John was highly respected across the Fire Service and EMS community. His dedication to service and leadership will be greatly missed by his emergency services colleagues.

The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad offers its condolences to the Gatton family during this difficult time.

The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad announces with regret the sudden passing of Life Member Rich Battenfield on Sunday, May 17, 2026. Rich was known for his years of dedicated service to the community.

Rich became a member of the department in March 2001 and held a number of positions over the years. At the time of his passing, he was serving as Member at Large for the department. In addition, Rich was an active member of the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit.

Rich was widely respected in the EMS community. Colleagues remember him for his willingness to listen, his sound advice, and his support for those around him. He was also known for his sense of humor. Many will remember Rich for his skillful and safe driving, whether operating an ambulance or medic unit. Rich routinely responded to requests for assistance and seldom turned down an opportunity to help. His commitment to service and his presence will be deeply missed by his Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad family.

The community extends its thoughts to the Battenfield family during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements will be announced when they become available.

Each set of cards includes 3 attached playing cards. The “caller” draws a card from a standard deck of playing cards. First player to match their cards to cards drawn wins.

Bluegrass at the Fairgrounds will feature performances by The Bluegrass Brothers and Dark Hollow. Admission will be paid at the door.

Advance tickets are available at the Bluegrass Jam Sessions held at the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad on Wednesday, May 20 and Wednesday, June 3 at 6:30 pm.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds, located at 42455 Fairgrounds Rd, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Tickets are $25 per person, with free admission for children under 13.

Proceeds will benefit the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad New Building Fund. For more information, contact Crystal Nelson at 240-538-5103.

Last night’s HVRS Kentucky Derby Watch Party was a huge success! Many thanks to our supporters, families and friends. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets!
Karen Seibert from Great Mills Trading Post was the winner of the $10,000 raffle prize. She graciously donated it back to the squad. We cannot thank her enough for her generosity!

This young man, David Dean, and his family have donated proceeds from golf cart raffles for over 3 years to the Hollywood Vol Rescue Squad in honor of Greg “Freebird”and Diana “Lady Di” Casoni. David is Greg and Diana’s grandson. This year the raffle netted $4,500 for the squad. David we can’t thank you enough!
