Longstreet Farm’s mission is to promote an appreciation for Monmouth County farm life at the end of the 19th century, preserving historic structures and practices through interpretive programs and tours. The farm’s livestock are raised and cared for just as they were in the past – to meet the labor, food, and material needs of the farm. Mules and horses help plow the fields and harvest crops; dairy cows, chickens and pigs provide food to eat; and sheep are raised for meat and wool. Today is National Mule Day!
Did you know mules have been bred for thousands of years, predating 3000 B.C. and are considered the first man-made hybrid animal. They are the hybrid offspring of a female horse and a male donkey, whereas mules themselves are sterile and cannot reproduce.
At Historic Longstreet Farm, mules help to turn the soil, prepare the fields, and plant, cultivate, harvest and compost the fields. When working, the mules wear bridles with "blinders", cup-shaped pieces of leather that block their view of everything except what is directly in front of them.

Today In Local History:
In 1924, Jonathan I. Holmes passed away at the age of 53 after a lingering illness. Jonathan was the great-grandson of Hendrick Longstreet and managed what is now Historic Longstreet Farm in the 1890s, the time period represented today by the living history site. He inherited the farm in 1911 from his aunt, Mary Ann Longstreet. The farm remained in the family until it was purchased by the Park System in 1967 from Jonathan's daughter and heir, Mary Longstreet Holmes Duncan.

At the time, 39 men had been elected to represent the 13 existing counties; the members from Monmouth County were Elisha Lawrence (Shrewsbury), Colonel Samuel Breese (Shrewsbury), and William Crawford (Middletown).
