'The boys', Caesar & Hannibal, were on a mission this morning in the pasture. Technically they are both full grown now at age 6, but Caesar just seems to continue to get bigger. He is probably 6" taller at the hump & out weighs Hannibal by 200-300 pounds. His hump is huge. The hump is how you determine how tall a bison is & I would estimate that Caesar is 6'2" & probably around 2000 pounds (+ or -). For all you smart people out there, that is a ton! When he runs, which isn't often & is usually down hill, at 40 mph it's like having a mid-size car in the pasture. Look both ways before crossing! Intimidation isn't being mean or demonstrative, it is about your demeanor & the way you carry yourself. Caesar carries himself pretty well!

It's a 'Red Dog' Stampede! Check out these little ones on the move. Within a few minutes they are up & walking & within a couple of hours running at full-speed & their agility would put Barry Sanders to shame. Momma also has to be agile on the run too, because just like their human counterparts they like to run right in front of mom. Now is the best time to plan your summer tour to visit Crown B Bison. The 'Red Dogs' are growing quickly & temperatures certainly aren't going to go down any time soon. This is my personal favorite time on the ranch watching the entire herd, but also having all the babies learning, growing & becoming members of our herd. They learn quickly not just from mom & siblings, but from their entire extended family.

Attention all you smokers & BBQ'ers - You asked for it & we listened! We had people who inquired about bison brisket. We added this cut to our already tasty steak, roasts & ground for the outdoor season. Not only is bison better for you, but it takes less time to cook. Less fat, less grease & less water gives you more meat for your money. Because bison is so lean, REMEMBER - LOW & SLOW is the way to go when you want to cook bison correctly.

Peaceful Day at the Pond. Even the bison were taking it easy this morning on Memorial Day. If you notice the momma's don't let those babies get into water that is very deep. In fact, they usually just let them get a drink & then out to the side. The bison won't stay in pond for very long & momma knows that water & 'Red Dogs' don't go to together. It's kind of like toddlers at the wading pool, just no squeals of pleasure from the bison. Not until they are a few months old will they get to really get into the pool. By the way, bison are really good swimmers. They mastered the bison paddle! 😉

This little 'Red Dog' isn't eating much grass yet, so while mom ate he was practicing his peek-a-boo skills!

Come out & see us Saturday at the Glory Days Celebration on the square in Holton to buy some meat, learn more about our ranch, schedule a bison tour or try out Kathy's Bison Burritos. They have become a hit with the Glory Days crowd.

Remember back in the day, The Fonz's hair on Happy Days. Or that guy who could run up & down the court or around the track & his hair would just bounce along on top of his head, but it never got messed up? Caesar is that guy! Rain or shine, wind or snow his hair just bounces along on top of that huge head. And believe it or not, no hair spray, no gel, just all natural. When we tell people about how big his head is before they go out on a tour & meet him, I'm not sure they believe that head is somewhere around 250 pounds, but when they meet the big guy they know, 'Man, Caesars hair is just like The Fonz. Ayyy!'
He is one cool dude! Correctamundo!

So far we are up to 8 little 'Red Dogs' with more to come. Our girl Quad (pic 1) has had calves the past 2 years, but they were born dead, so we really needed her to have a live little one this year or we were going to have to make a tough decision. She is such a sweetheart & we were SO glad on Friday when she came down to see us with her first calf! This one was a little smaller & I think she had less problem delivering. Yes, they are livestock & not pets, but it is still feels good when your animals have success.

We started the morning with 3 little 'Red Dogs' & by noon we had doubled to 6. As we have said in the past in our posts, "All it takes is one". We have 5 little ones up at the DK pasture & finally had our first one here at the home place. Licorice is our competitive girl. She always likes to be first to come running to get fed & the last two years she has been the first to have our first 'Red Dog' in the home pasture. When I watched this video my first thought was "OOOO BIG SCAREY BISON". We really do have amazing animals that within 10 minutes of having this baby she was willing to bring him up to meet me. He was so new when I came upon them that he was still wobbly & she still had the placenta hanging out & she was still cleaning him up. We respect the animals, but don't fear them. We also build relationships with them so that they trust us.

Are you ready for some cuteness?! Remember when there was a wonder of investigating a new world, and for a baby EVERYTHING is new. Check out the 2 day old investigating the mini-truck & getting petted. If that's not a bison smile on his face, I don't know my bison! I wish it wasn't so windy because he was purring while I was rubbing his head. Momma trusts us, but notice she keeps a close eye on things!

First 'Red Dog' of 2026! Momma ( #46) & little guy (we think) joined big sister & came up to join us this morning up at the DK. I would say he is probably around 24 hours old. Big sister was the first 'Red Dog' 2 years ago. Hopefully, this will start a ripple & all of the other momma's at the DK will get busy having theirs. As we always say "It only takes one" - that seems to be the case most years with 'Red Dog' season.

For those of you who are new followers to our page, 'Red Dogs' are what bison calves are called by Native Americans. I think it's pretty obvious why they called them that. When they are born they only weigh around 40 pounds, but they are up & around & walking in 10 minutes & running within a short time. In nature they gotta be able to keep up with the herd!

Enjoy the video & celebrate the beginning of the best time of year to raise bison! Hopefully, many more to come in the next few weeks!

"The quality of the food you eat, determines the quality of your health."
Anything you cook with beef you can substitute bison. It tastes good & it's good for you. I think that pretty much says it all.
