As August arrives, we celebrate nine remarkable International Volleyball Hall of Fame inductees whose birthdays fall this month.

This outstanding group spans generations, continents, and every dimension of the sport — from legendary indoor players and trailblazing beach volleyball pioneers to championship coaches and visionary leaders who helped shape volleyball's growth across six decades of international competition.

Their collective legacy reflects the extraordinary range of volleyball's global story — builders who developed powerhouse programs from the ground up, players who defined eras on Olympic courts and professional tours, and coaches whose teams won World Championships, Olympic medals, and titles on every continent. Together, they embody the excellence, passion, and enduring impact that define the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Today we celebrate the heavenly birthday of the late Flora Jean "Flo" Hyman — a 1988 IVHF inductee, the captain of Team USA's historic 1984 Olympic silver medal team, and one of the most transformative figures in the history of American sport.

A towering presence on the court and off it, Flo helped elevate the United States women's volleyball program onto the world stage while becoming one of the nation's most powerful advocates for gender equity in athletics. Before her passing in 1986, she testified before Congress in support of strengthening Title IX and the Civil Rights Restoration Act, using her platform to expand opportunities for generations of female athletes to come.

Her legacy continues to grow with time. National Girls and Women in Sports Day was originally created in her memory. The Women's Sports Foundation established the Flo Hyman Memorial Award in her honor. USA Volleyball's highest player recognition bears her name. And in 2025, she was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame — a fitting tribute to a pioneer whose influence on the sport, and on society, has never faded.

What an unforgettable day celebrating the rich history and lasting legacy of Puerto Rican volleyball! 🇵🇷🏐

More than 200 guests joined us at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Museum for the Grand Opening of our Puerto Rico Volleyball Exhibit, a celebration filled with culture, history, and community. Guests enjoyed incredible performances by Bomba de Aquí, authentic Puerto Rican cuisine from Boricua Bites, and inspiring remarks from the President and Vice President of the Puerto Rico Volleyball Hall of Fame, along with two inductees.

A special highlight came from the exhibit's curator and artist, who shared the remarkable journey of bringing this project to life and reminded us that this exhibit is not the end of Puerto Rico's volleyball story—it is only the beginning. We hope this exhibit inspires continued preservation and celebration of volleyball history throughout Puerto Rico and around the world.

The celebration continued with a spirited Holyoke vs. Salinas, Sister City Match, where Holyoke earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory to retain the Sister City Challenge Trophy, showcasing the friendship and connection between our two communities through sport.

To cap off an incredible day, the festivities moved outside the museum as thousands gathered for the opening night of Holyoke's Fiestas Patronales, celebrating Puerto Rican culture with music, food, and community just steps away from volleyball's home.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this historic day possible. Together, we honored the past, celebrated the present, and took another important step toward preserving volleyball's global story for future generations.

Happy Birthday to the legendary Zé Roberto — a 2024 IVHF inductee and one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of volleyball!

The only coach in volleyball history to win Olympic gold medals with both a men's and women's national team, Zé Roberto first represented Brazil as a player at the 1976 Montreal Olympics before building a coaching legacy without parallel. He led the Brazilian men to gold at Barcelona 1992, then guided the Brazilian women's program to back-to-back Olympic gold medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, silver at Tokyo 2020, and bronze at Paris 2024 — accumulating more than 23 international medals across his tenure with the women's team.

Still active as head coach of the Brazil Women's National Team and technical leader of the renowned Barueri Volleyball Project, Zé Roberto continues to develop the next generation of Brazilian champions. He also remains an influential voice in Brazilian sport, speaking at major leadership forums including the Brazilian Olympic Committee's Women in Sport Forum, championing gender equity and high-performance culture.

On July 30, we celebrate the birthday of the legendary Misty May-Treanor — a 2016 IVHF inductee and one of the greatest beach volleyball players in the history of the sport!

Alongside partner Kerri Walsh Jennings, Misty accomplished what no beach volleyball team — male or female — had ever done: winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012. The duo went 21-0 across their three Olympic campaigns, won three consecutive FIVB World Championships, and at one point reeled off 112 consecutive match victories. Misty retired in 2012 with then-records of 112 tournament wins, 43 international titles, and over $2.1 million in career earnings.

Since retiring, she has remained deeply embedded in the sport — serving as a television commentator for major beach volleyball and Olympic broadcasts, coaching at the collegiate level as a Volunteer Assistant at USC Women's Beach Volleyball, and joining the Founding Advisory Board of LOVB Los Angeles, where she supports youth engagement, athlete development, fan experience, and community partnerships.
