So many great tips in this post! Start doing number 1 early and keep doing it even if you or they think they might be too old to enjoy being read to. There is no age limit for a good family read-aloud!
We LOVE the beauty and power of 📖BOOKS! 📖
One of the best things we can do for our children is to cultivate the love of reading.
This is challenging for some kids but CAN BE DONE!
Top tips to grow a reader:
1️⃣ Read out loud to your kids often even your big kids!
2️⃣ Be intentional about surrounding your children with books! Make weekly trips to the library. For special occasions like birthdays and Christmas, always be sure to give books too.
3️⃣ Ask, “what are you reading?” Make this question a big part of your life. When you’re with your child and a friend, ask what the friend reads, and start a conversation. Your child may want to read what friends are enthusiastic about.
4️⃣ Carry a book with you at all times. With a book by your side, your default mode will be reading not scrolling social media or cramming a few emails when you have a couple of minutes.
5️⃣ Encourage your children to keep a book with them as well. Stash a few books in the car so your family always has a book to grab.
6️⃣ Embrace magazines. Check out the Week Junior for a kid friendly weekly news publication or Highlights for elementary kiddos. My middle schoolers also love cooking magazines and Real Simple.
7️⃣ Encourage your children to read a book series! There are so many good ones out there. It is exciting for a child to finish one book and know the plot continues in the next one.
What a difference it will make to encourage your children to read instead of consuming mindless entertainment on a smartphone or tablet! 📚📚📚
