It's Alaska Invasive Species Awareness Week — and we want to talk about a common one around here: Prunus trees, better known as Chokecherry, European Bird Cherry or Mayday.

These trees are pretty when in bloom (like right now!), but they spread aggressively and crowd out native plants, reduce biodiversity, spread along salmon streams where they alter the availability of prey for juvenile salmon, are toxic to moose and more.

Here's the good news: you don't necessarily have to tackle them alone! Kenai Peninsula Cooperative Invasive Species Management, and the Homer and Kenai Soil and Water Conservation Districts are teaming up to help. Kenai Peninsula landowners may be eligible for free tree removal and replacement.

For more information about Chokecherry Tree Removal Assistance go to https://kenaiinvasives.org/

Great news! As of June 8th, the Raw Water Transmission Main project is mostly complete!

All new piping between the raw water pumps and water treatment plant has been installed and pressure tested. Pump house modifications are nearly done too (we're just waiting on a long-lead surge relief valve to replace the exiting pressure surge relief tank).

This week & next: Final site work wraps up—seeding disturbed areas, reinstalling fencing, and pulling fiber optic cable to IT terminals at the Water Treatment Plant and the pump house! 🙌🏼

As temperatures finally warm, Homer’s gravel roads are drying out and getting dusty.

Before applying dust control, roads need to fully thaw and dry to support heavy equipment used to grade them, restoring their proper surface and drainage.

Calcium Chloride will be applied to reduce dust and strengthen the road once the roads are graded. If conditions are too dry, crews may add water to the road surface, as moisture is essential for Calcium Chloride to be effective.

Treating about 30 miles of roads takes 2–3 weeks, so please consider slowing down and enjoying the sunshine as you travel the gravel roads.
We appreciate the community’s patience!

National Smile Day!

Some smiles just have a way of showing up right when you need them. For over forty years, Robert Archibald has been doing exactly that — quietly, joyfully, and consistently — volunteering his time across our community and region, from local organizations to regional advisory commissions and City of Homer government. One smile, one volunteer hour, one act of service at a time, he has changed our community for the better. Recently recognized by the Alaska State legislature with a honorary citation, we celebrate and thank you this National Smile Day, Robert, for all the reasons you give us to smile back.

What is the Homer Harbor Expansion Draft Feasibility Report — and how do I comment?

More than three years of study went into finding potential solutions to Homer Harbor's overcrowding and safety challenges — the Draft Feasibility Report is the result. It includes engineering, environmental, and economic analysis of four options and presents the US Army Corps of Engineers' recommended plan — Alternative 2 — for public review.

Community input has helped shape this study from the start, and the current public comment period is the official channel to respond to the US Army Corps of Engineers findings and recommended plan before the study is finalized.

Through June 22nd, the public is invited to review the report and submit comments directly to the US Army Corps of Engineers. All comments are welcome. Comments that identify gaps, address how the plan works for harbor users, or suggest additional information the Corps should consider are especially valuable.
