D-Day Remembrance – June 6, 1944

Today, remember and honor the heroes of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. 82 years ago today, more than 160,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel and faced unimaginable danger, many knowing they would never return home. Their sacrifice and service secured our freedom.

As E-bikes become more popular, we would like to remind riders of the laws and safety tips that help keep everyone safe on the road.

- Obey all traffic laws, such as stop signs & signals. The laws apply
to e-bike riders!
-E-Bikes & E-Scooters are allowed on local streets and highways
with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less.
-E-Bike & E-Scooter riders do not require a license but must be 16
years or older.
-E-Bikes & E-Scooters do not have to be registered but it is always
a good idea to record the serial number in the event it is lost
or stolen.
-Helmets are required for Class 3 E-bike riders and required for E-
Bike and E-Scooter riders under 18 but it is always good to wear a
helmet no matter what Class E-Bike you are riding. Protect
yourself!
-E-Bikes & E-Scooters are not permitted on state highways,
interstates, or other roads with speed limits above 30 mph.
-Lights are required when riding at night & reflective vests are
recommended

Today, we participated in the 40th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics New York along with other local and state law enforcement. Throughout May and June officers across the state act as “Guardians of the Flame” as they participate with the LETR. Cortland Police was the host agency as the LETR started at Suggett Park and ended at the Cortland Police Department.

With our move to the Town Hall, we moved the drug take back kiosk and the sharps disposal kiosk with us. The drug take back kiosk is located in our lobby, accessible 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday from either our main entrance off from Water St or from the back entrance by the court window. The sharps disposal kiosk is outside our main door and is accessible 24/7. These are two separate kiosks. So please don't put sharps in the medication kiosk or medications in the sharps kiosk. Thanks!

Yesterday, Officer Smiley responded to Durkee Park for two goslings entangled in fishing line. One of the goslings was deceased but he was able to untangle/cut the line from the other one. The local Environmental Conservation Officer was contacted but was unable to respond to take the gosling. The Environmental Conservation Officer provided Officer Smiley instructions on how to release the gosling so that it could be “fostered” by other geese (locate a family of geese and release the gosling, and they will accept it), which he did.

Just a reminder to dispose of fishing line and other garbage properly because they can be harmful, if not fatal to wildlife. Waterfowl, turtles, and marine mammals can easily become tangled in discarded line, which is thin and strong, wrapping tightly around wings, beaks, legs, or bodies, restricting movement and cutting off circulation. So please do your part and put garbage in its place. Thanks.
