The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 291 Standard provides the recommended practice for fire flow testing and marking fire hydrants. In communities across the nation this color coding system is used to signify on sight the tested GPM (Gallons Per Minute) flow rate of each specific hydrant. Some communities paint the entire fire hydrant the color matching that hydrant’s tested GPM vs just the bonnet/nozzle caps. This color coding system helps fire departments know the GPM availability of water from the municipality as they respond to a fire scene.
