A New Landmark Takes Shape in Downtown Homer
A new mural is complete in downtown Homer, bringing vibrant color to a long-unoccupied building near the post office and creating a fresh photo opportunity for visitors.
The project began about two years ago when Rhonda Porter, art teacher at Homer High School, Jimmy Hand of Main Street Homer, and the director of the Homer Cultural District, Christina Black Gladney, joined forces to make the mural a reality. Rhonda created the design, while Christina secured a Louisiana state grant to fund the project.
Although the grant covered October 2025 through September 2026, funding did not arrive until February 2026. Painting then had to wait for suitable weather and building preparation. Cody Knighton of Home Restorations LLC completed the prep work, and artists began painting in June.
One wall welcomes visitors to “Historic Downtown Homer,” while another invites them to “Meet Me at the Corner of Main Street.”
The mural’s bright, lively colors were selected to bring new life to a prominent corner that had been neglected for years. Organizers are thrilled that it will be completed in time for visitors to enjoy, and photograph, during Legends Fest. A public presentation is also planned to recognize Rhonda’s work as lead artist.
The project represents a community collaboration among the Homer Cultural District, Main Street Homer, local schools, building donor Rusty Billings, and Home Restorations. The mural has already received an enthusiastic response online, with community members sharing posts and expressing excitement about the transformation.
The Homer Cultural District is a state designation, not a city division. Its work has included art shows, musical performances and an artist center, and it files an annual report documenting changes within the district. With limited staffing, the director welcomes ideas and volunteers for future projects involving art, music and poetry.
