Timucua Indians originally lived here until they were completely wiped out in the 1800’s by disease or forced to move away. They left behind the largest totem ever found in the Americas. In the 1500’s, this became the site of the first European colony in the New World, where 300 French explorers established the fort and lived until Spanish explorers from St. Augustine killed them all, making St. Augustine the oldest, continuously inhabited city in America.

The first homestead application was filed in Nebraska in 1862 and the last files in Alaska in 1974. In total 30 states were part of the homestead act, giving away 160 acres per family should they improve the land and reside on it continuously for 5 years. Millions of immigrants came from around the world to participate and it also allowed women and free slaves to serve as head of households and own land for the first time. It is estimated 93 million Americans today are ancestors of homesteaders.

Sadly, it became the largest fort on the northern plains and served as the spot where many treaties were signed but as relations changed, many military campaigns against the Northern Plains Tribes were launched from here.
