CERT Training - Seventh session – Drill / Séptima sesión - Simulacro

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, the Office of Emergency and Disaster Services of the Diocese of Birmingham held the seventh and final session of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course.

On this day, the trainees applied the knowledge they had acquired during the previous six Saturday sessions of the course. The final exercise consisted of a simulation of an F5 tornado (including injured and trapped individuals, small fires, and assessments of damaged utilities and debris).

The objectives of this drill were:
• Establish the positions of the ICS (Incident Command System) and team leaders
• Assess the size of the scene
• Set up a “Triage” area for all victims
• Set up a medical treatment area
• Assess and extinguish all fires
• Conduct search and rescue operations in the affected area
• Submit the final report to Incident Command

El sábado 8 de agosto del 2026, la oficina de Servicios de Emergencia y Desastres de la Diócesis de Birmingham tuvo la séptima y última sesión del curso de entrenamiento CERT (Equipo Comunitario de Respuesta a Emergencias).

En este día los alumnos emplearon los conocimientos adquiridos en las pasadas 6 sesiones sabatinas del curso, la práctica final consistió en un Simulacro de un Tornado categoría F5 (personas heridas y atrapadas, pequeños incendios, controles de servicios dañados y escombros).

Los objetivos de este simulacro fueron:
• Establecer las posiciones de ICS (Sistema de Comando de incidentes) y líderes de equipos
• Evaluar el tamaño de la escena
• Crear un área de “Triage” para todas las víctimas
• Crear un área de tratamiento Médico
• Evaluar y apagar todos los incendios
• Realizar operaciones de búsqueda y rescate en el área afectada
• Entregar el informe final al Comando del Incidente

CERT Training - Sixth session

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Office of Emergency and Disaster Services of the Diocese of Birmingham held the sixth session of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course.

On this day, the participating students were given a REVIEW of all the topics covered during this Saturday course, and they received their certificates and a CERT backpack, which they will use during the final practical exercise (a tornado drill in their last Saturday session).

CERT Training - fifth session

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, the Office of Emergency and Disaster Services of the Diocese of Birmingham held the fifth session of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course.

On this day, the topic of “Search and Rescue Operations” were covered. Participants learned about:
• Search and Rescue Assessment: How to assess a situation in which search and rescue teams will operate.
• Conducting Indoor and Outdoor Search Operations: How to systematically search for survivors in a disaster.
• Conducting Rescue Operations: Safe techniques for lifting, prying, shoring, and extracting survivors.

• Evaluación de búsqueda y rescate: Cómo evaluar una situación donde operarán los equipos de búsqueda y rescate.
• Ejecución de operaciones de búsqueda en interiores y exteriores: Cómo buscar sistemáticamente sobrevivientes en un desastre.
• Ejecución de operaciones de rescate: Técnicas seguras para levantar, apalancar, apuntalar y sacar a sobrevivientes.

CERT Training - Fourth session

On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Emergency/Disaster Services office of the Diocese of Birmingham,
held our fourth session of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course.

On this day, the topics of “Fire Safety” and “Terrorism and CERT” were covered. Participants learned about:
• The Chemistry of Fire: How a fire starts, the different classes of fires, and how to choose the correct means to extinguish each type of fire.
• Considerations for Fire Assessment: How to assess fires, calculate firefighting resources, and determine a course of action.
• Portable Fire Extinguishers: How to identify the types of portable fire extinguishers and how to operate them.
• Firefighting Safety: How to decide whether to attempt to extinguish a fire; how to safely approach and extinguish a fire.
• Hazardous Materials: How to identify potentially hazardous materials in storage, in transit, and in your home.
• Fire Hazards and Utilities: How to identify potential fire hazards and utility-related risks in the home and workplace; how to implement successful fire prevention strategies.
• Terrorism: Terrorism is defined, including the objectives and tactics of some terrorist groups, and details are provided on how to respond when an active shooter is in the vicinity.
• Eight Signs of Terrorism: The eight signs of terrorism and how to report suspicious activity.
• Prepare for an Incident in Your Neighborhood: Steps to take to be prepared at home, at work, and in your neighborhood.
• Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) Threats: Basic guidelines during a HazMat or CBRNE event are identified.

• Química de un incendio: Cómo se produce un incendio, las clases de incendios y cómo elegir los medios correctos para extinguir cada tipo de incendio.
• Consideraciones para la evaluación de un incendio: Cómo evaluar incendios, calcular los recursos de extinción de incendios y determinar un curso de acción.
• Extintores de incendio portátiles: Cómo identificar los tipos de extintores portátiles y cómo operarlos.
• Seguridad en la extinción de incendios: Cómo decidir si debiera intentar la extinción de un incendio; cómo abordar y extinguir un incendio de forma segura.
• Materiales peligrosos: Cómo identificar materiales potencialmente peligrosos en almacenamiento, en tránsito y en su hogar.
• Peligros de incendio y servicios públicos: Cómo identificar posibles peligros de incendio y servicios públicos en el hogar y el lugar de trabajo; cómo implementar estrategias exitosas de prevención de incendios.
• Terrorismo: Se define el terrorismo, incluidos los objetivos y las tácticas de algunos grupos terroristas, y se detalla cómo responder cuando un francotirador activo está en las cercanías.

“CERT Training 2026 - Third Session”

Last Saturday, July 11, 2026, the Emergency/Disaster Services office of the Diocese of Birmingham
held our third session of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course.

On this day, the session on “Medical Operations in Disaster Situations” was held. Participants learned about:
• Assistance with medical operations in disaster situations: how to assist with immediate tasks, such as controlling bleeding, maintaining normal body temperature, establishing an airway, providing comfort to patients, and administering basic first aid to treat certain injuries.
• Mass casualty incidents: How to assist response teams during mass casualty incidents.
• Functions of medical operations in disaster situations: Main functions of medical operations in disaster situations (Triage/Assessment, Treatment, Transport, Mortuary, Supply)
• Medical treatment areas in disaster situations: Types of medical treatment areas.
• Head-to-Toe Assessment: How to perform a head-to-toe assessment to identify and treat injuries.
• Public Health Considerations: How to maintain hygiene and sanitation.

• Funciones de las operaciones médicas en casos de desastres: Funciones principales de operaciones médicas en casos de desastres (Triaje/Evaluación, Tratamiento, Transporte, Morgue, Suministro)
• Areas de tratamiento médico en casos de desastres: Tipos de áreas de tratamiento médico.
• Evaluación de la cabeza a los pies: Cómo realizar una evaluación de la cabeza a los pies para identificar y tratar lesiones.
• Consideraciones de salud pública: Cómo mantener la higiene y la salubridad.

“2026 CERT TRAINING”

On Saturday, June 20, 2026, the Emergency/Disaster Services office of the Diocese of Birmingham welcomed participants enrolled in the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course, which consists of six Saturday sessions and concludes with a drill in which participants will apply the knowledge they have gained during the training. They will also receive a certificate accrediting them as trained volunteers to assist their community, family, or neighbors in disaster or emergency situations.

The CERT course is being taught by staff from the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Homewood Fire Department. This course is being taught in both English and Spanish.

El pasado sábado 20 de junio del 2026, La oficina de Emergency/Disaster Services of Diocese of Birmingham recibió a los participantes inscritos al curso de entrenamiento CERT(Equipo Comunitario de Respuesta a Emergencias), el cual tiene una duración de 6 sesiones sabatinas, finalizando con un simulacro donde los participantes aplicaran los conocimientos aprendidos durante el entrenamiento, además recibirán su certificado que los acreditara como un voluntario capacitado para ayudar a su comunidad, familia o vecinos en situaciones de desastre o emergencia.

El curso CERT está siendo impartido por personal de la Agencia de Manejo de emergencias (EMA por sus siglas en inglés) de Jefferson County y por el departamento de Bomberos de Homewood. Este curso está siendo impartido en inglés y español.

On Friday, May 29, 2026, the Emergency/Disaster Services office met with staff from the offices of EMA (Emergency Management Agency) and the Homewood Fire Department to finalize the details of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training course, which will begin on June 20 at our facilities located at 92 Oxmoor Rd., Birmingham, AL 35209.
