We know many Homewood residents are still facing repairs after the recent tornadoes, and the last thing we want is to make the recovery process more difficult. To help ease some of that burden, the Village of Homewood is waiving specific permit fees through September 30 for residents completing their own tornado-related home repairs.

- If your fence or roof was damaged and you are repairing or replacing it yourself, the permit will be free through September 30. Residents repairing their own fence or roof must still complete the permit process and schedule a final inspection. You will not be charged for the permit.

- If you hire a contractor to complete repairs, the contractor is responsible for completing the permit process and paying the applicable permit fee.

You can apply for a permit online at: https://vlg-homewood-il.smartgovcommunity.com/Public/Home

You might ask, “why are permits and inspections still required?”

Simply put: to protect you, your home, and your neighbors.

Permits help ensure repairs are completed according to current building and safety codes. Inspections provide an extra set of trained eyes to make sure the work was completed properly and does not create a safety concern for your property or neighboring properties.

The permit process also helps protect homeowners when hiring someone to complete repairs. All contractors performing work in Homewood must be properly licensed, bonded, and insured. This provides an important layer of accountability and protection, especially after a major storm when unqualified or dishonest contractors may target communities with widespread damage. We call them “bad actors.”

Permits also create an official record of work completed on your property, which may be important for insurance, future repairs, or the eventual sale of your home.

We know recovering from these storms will take time. Our goal is to make the repair process a little easier while continuing to make sure the work being done throughout Homewood is safe and done correctly.

Due to the significant tornado damage sustained throughout our community, the Village of Homewood has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2026 Beautification Awards Ceremony, originally scheduled for September 17.

This year’s Beautification Award winners were selected prior to the storms, and we still want to recognize the care and pride they bring to our community. Members of the Beautification Committee will personally deliver award certificates to each of this year’s recipients.

Congratulations to our 2026 Beautification Award winners, and thank you for helping make Homewood beautiful!

Neighbors: There were some really good points made in the recent online discussion. We recognize that the recent storms created hazards beyond any of our control. In recognition of the unprecedented storms and resultant damage, we are suspending all residential code enforcement actions until further notice. Unfortunately, there are still some critical life, health and safety items that we must work together with residents to resolve, but these items will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Stay resilient and go Homewood!

EF-1 Tornado / Village Update - August 16, 2026 - 10:45 a.m.

The Village inquired with ComEd this morning at 7:15 a.m. to receive a current status report. As of 10:45 a.m. Homewood is at 99.9% of power restored.

Don't forget, if your home was impacted by the EF-1 tornado Tuesday morning, Cook County is asking residents to fill out an online Self-Assessment Storm Damage Survey. The survey will help document the full impact of this event and support ongoing recovery efforts. The survey is available here: https://shorturl.at/YExT6

We have a long road ahead as we work to clear parkways and make Homewood beautiful again. We ask for your patience and understanding as Public Works crews work tirelessly to clean up our community as quickly and safely as possible. You will also see additional contractors working alongside our Public Works team to assist with cleanup efforts. This work is already underway and will continue well into the coming weeks. While Homewood may seem small, our community includes many neighborhoods that sustained significant damage.

We will continue to update you on cleanup efforts as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your continued patience.
