The idea for the Homewood Police Foundation grew out of a deep respect and appreciation we all shared for what our officers do every day. We recognized there needed to be a way for both corporate and private citizens to have an active role in supporting the men and women who protect and serve our community — from helping with education programs and events to providing extended training these offic

ers need to meet our world's ever-changing law enforcement challenges. This not only helps foster a stronger partnership between the department and the community, it also creates a positive environment that attracts the best and brightest in the future. We established an Advisory Board, consisting of the Chief of Police, the Superintendent of Homewood City Schools, The Mayor of Homewood, a State Senator, Chief Municipal Judge and the Chamber of Commerce President. The Homewood Police Foundation's purpose is to raise funds for the Homewood Police Department, including its community programs, training, equipment needs and benevolence funds. We also endeavor to work with other foundations and community groups to ensure officers throughout Alabama receive the support they need. The Foundation is not meant to replace the yearly budget allotted to the department, but to supplement those efforts when an unexpected need arises. The organization is also committed to raising awareness among the community of what the Homewood Police Department does and strengthen the relationship between citizens and officers. Programs and events we already support include, The K9 Program, National Night Out, Training, raising funds for equipment, Benevolence Fund, Needs for Injured Officers, Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, and any unexpected financial need we are asked to help secure.

Looking forward to the climb tomorrow to honor those who sacrificed their lives on and after September 11, 2001. This will be my third year participating. My climbing partner, retired Hoover Fire Fighter Scott Watkins (and Red Mountain Search Dog Association team member) and I train several weeks during the year to take it on. I’ll be doing it in honor of my first responder friends and Search and Rescue colleagues.… including the K9s… wearing a 30 lb. oxygen tank. Nothing compared to the full turnout gear many will be wearing. Definitely makes me appreciate how they do such a demanding job under more extreme circumstances.

UPDATE: JOEY HAS BEEN SAFELY LOCATED! We appreciate everyone's help!

UPDATE: A $1000 cash reward from private donors has been offered for the return on Joey!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We had a new K9 (who is apparently an escape artist) leave his kennel on Highway 5 in the Nauvoo community.

K9 Joey is a Belgian Malinois, and is typically very social. He is microchipped, and is not considered armed or dangerous. However, we still don't suggest trying to corral him yourself- please call us asap.

He was scheduled to start K9 school on September 4th.

Please contact the Walker County Sheriff’s Office if you find him at (205) 302-6464, option 1!

Thanks to Samford University for hosting
The Homewood Chamber of Commerce Membership Luncheon on Tuesday. Enjoyed hearing guest speaker Martin Newton, Samford Director of Athletics, as well as several of their top athletes.

Board member Kelly Seibels and I enjoyed meeting Todd Yelton, women’s soccer coach at Samford. Under his leadership they are nine time southern conference champions. And great seeing City of Homewood’s JJ Bischoff and City Attorney Mike Kendrick.

Homewood has so many great organizations!

On Wednesday we were honored to attend the Crime Stoppers luncheon to support Homewood Detective Jeremy Baswell who was one of the recipients of the The Myers-McBee Award. This award is named for Chief Bill Myers and Doug McBee, who were with the Birmingham Police. In 1983, these two individuals started the Crime Stoppers Program Birmingham. Since its inception, Crime Stoppers has worked to create a partnership between law enforcement and members of the community that may have information about a crime but do not want to be identified. The Myers-McBee Award is given to detectives that have been proactive in using the services of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama to assist in solving cases and identifying suspects so that their community is safe.

Congratulations to Detective Baswell for a job well done!

And thanks to newly elected Jefferson County Commissioner Mike Bolin for joining us.

While they don’t do it for the accolades, many officers earn our gratitude and respect every day. Citizens may not always be aware of what they’re doing to protect the city, but every year we make sure THEY know they’re appreciated and that we see when they go above and beyond the call of duty. This years Awards Ceremony recognized several exemplary officers, Units, as well as Medics from Homewood Fire Department and the Citizen of the Year who made an impact during 2022 and 2023. Thank you all for your service!

Shout out to Sam Nakos and Rita at Demetri's for providing an amazing meal for Homewood PD’s civilian employees last week. Sam and Rita have been longtime supporters of The Homewood Police Foundation and Homewood Police Department. And our civilian employees from administration, and maintenance, to Dispatch and Corrections, are who make the department run.

Congratulations to Cpl. Gabe Ferguson on his retirement and future adventures in Alaska! Yep, he’s trading in his Tahoe for sled dogs. (Just kidding) He will take the 25+ years of service he provided Homewood citizens and now bless the people of Bethel. We will miss having him as our liaison with Homewood CRU and working together on events. We presented Gabe with a gift card as a token of our appreciation. Please join us in wishing him good favor as he embarks on this new chapter. Congratulations to Officer Vernarr Hughes who was named Officer of the Year by the City of Homewood! He is a prime example of why I love supporting this department. Vernarr always has a smile on his face, has great integrity, and puts others before himself. You can not leave an encounter with Vernarr without your own smile.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the kindness our citizens show our officers and all employees during the season. Every year, Citizens Police Academy alum Maureen Mccorkle cooks an elaborate breakfast and I have the honor of tagging along as she brings it to HPD headquarters for those working. (Ok, so she entrusts me with the scrambled eggs but that’s perhaps one thing I can’t mess up 😆).

This year we also walked in to a beautiful spread of treats from one of our corporate partners, Savage's Bakery… quite honestly a hometown bakery that could easily be from a Hallmark Christmas movie.

We have several officers, dispatch, and corrections officers working today instead of being home with their families. Please take a moment to pray for them and if you see them in the street give them a hearty “Merry Christmas” and thank you.

This is what makes Homewood special at Christmas and all year long. And it makes our goal with the Foundation possible. Merry Christmas to all today!

On Sunday, Vestavia, Homewood, an Mountain Brook First Responders gathered at Vestavia City Hall to honor the memories of those lost on September 11. Guest speaker Michael A. Williams had a front row seat that day as the top Secret Service official at the White House. He shared his experience and lessons learned from that day, with humility and gratitude. Yes, it's been 21 years. But the significance is as fresh as if it were yesterday. So much of our history was shaped by that day and many of the first responders and military who are active today were inspired by those events to pick up the baton and carry on the fight. My own nieces and nephews were not even born yet but it has certainly influenced their world. My prayer is that we never forget, never lose sight of why we MUST always remember, and ensure that generations to come don't just see it as another date from history they have to memorize. It was an honor, as always, to spend this day with my colleagues, friends, and family. Thank you to our sister association, Vestavia Hills Police Foundation, for allowing me to be a part of it. From the Hoover Climb to Remember. Much respect.

I’ll be posting more later but this moment from the stair climb needed to stand on its own. To me it embodies the emotion, spirit, and reverence of the day. And honestly I felt as if God had peeled back the curtain of time for me to catch but a glimpse of what those first responders experienced that day, and overcame to go where many wouldn’t have dared.

Every year Homewood officers and citizens are recognized for their outstanding work in tthe field and on the job. This year saw many acts that went above and beyond the call of duty and citizenship, including Edgewood's very own Sam Daibes. Sam has been serving our officers for decades, both while working at Moneer's and now as owner of Sam's Deli.

National Night Out 2022 was a huge success and proves once again that Homewood will always be a close-knit community that exudes the best of Normal Rockwell's renderings of small-town America. It's still alive and well here, with police, fire, vendors, and musicians joining with citizens to celebrate what makes Homewood special. Thank you to all who came out and made this a special evening again. Our officers love meeting the public they protect and serve.

Crimestoppers luncheon today brought together employees from the city, courts, law enforcement, and support services to celebrate the years successful apprehensions of criminals around the Birmingham area, thanks to the Crimestoppers program. Congratulations to this years honorees (including Homewood’s own Sergeant Chris Morgan) who all went above and beyond the call of duty to bring these criminals to justice. And of course I got to meet the K9 honoree, K9 Georgia and her handler, Renee Whitcomb, with Canine Companions. Georgia provides invaluable support to kids who are going through the court system or having to testify.

Wow! 4 years ago today the first shovels of dirt were moved to ceremoniously begin building the new Homewood PD headquarters on West Valley and Bagbey Drive. It’s not only provided a well-deserved space for our officers but a welcome presence in the neighborhood. So many great things have happened since they opened the doors.

They often go unnoticed. Especially in our suburban utopias. But in that moment of crisis, when the unimaginable happens, they make their presence known. Either as the saving grace of those in need or the hammer of justice to others. Whether in the blue of daily uniform or the camo of the tactical team, they tread where many never would; their badges reflecting honor and commitment even through the darkness. Yes, they often go unnoticed. Until you need them.

I'm just an ordinary citizen -- in an extraordinary country. I wish I could extend my heartfelt thanks to every officer in the United States!

Sir and Ma'am: may your path be paved with words of appreciation and deeds of gratitude for your generous spirit and your public service.

If the forces of darkness come against you, please remember this reversal in 2 Kings 14-17:

So [the king of Aram] sent horses and chariots there and a great army; they came by night, and surrounded the city.

15 When an attendant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. His servant said, “Alas, master! What shall we do?” 16 He replied, “Do not be afraid, for there are more with us than there are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed: “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw; the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

May legions of God's angels surround you as your vanguard and your rearguard, on your right flank and your left.
