Homewood Police Foundation The Homewood Police Foundation's raises funds for the Homewood Police Department, including its community programs, training, equipment, and the needs and welfare of its officers.

We are a 501 C 3 organization, so all donations are tax deductible. The idea for the Homewood Police Foundation grew out of a deep respect and appreciation we all shared for what our officers do every day. We recognized there needed to be a way for both corporate and private citizens to have an active role in supporting the men and women who protect and serve our community — from helping with education programs and events to providing extended training these officers need to meet our world's ever-changing law enforcement challenges. This not only helps foster a stronger partnership between the department and the community, it also creates a positive environment that attracts the best and brightest in the future. We established an Advisory Board, consisting of the Chief of Police, the Superintendent of Homewood City Schools, The Mayor of Homewood, a State Senator, Chief Municipal Judge and the Chamber of Commerce President. The Homewood Police Foundation's purpose is to raise funds for the Homewood Police Department, including its community programs, training, equipment needs and benevolence funds. We also endeavor to work with other foundations and community groups to ensure officers throughout Alabama receive the support they need. The Foundation is not meant to replace the yearly budget allotted to the department, but to supplement those efforts when an unexpected need arises. The organization is also committed to raising awareness among the community of what the Homewood Police Department does and strengthen the relationship between citizens and officers. Programs and events we already support include, The K9 Program, National Night Out, Training, raising funds for equipment, Benevolence Fund, Needs for Injured Officers, Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, and any unexpected financial need we are asked to help secure.

Happy Birthday to retired HPD Chief Phil Dodd! Yesterday he was presented with the final flag ever flown over the previous headquarters on 29th Ave. South where he served as an officer and Chief. Thank you, Phil, for all your years of service to Homewood.

Congratulations to Homewood PD on its new headquarters in West Homewood! The official ribbon cutting yesterday brought city officials and citizens, as well as representatives from BL Harbert (the construction company in charge of the project) together to celebrate the official opening. Guests were then taken on a tour of the facility. Walking in to the building, visitors will find a large lobby area with personnel to assist them (instead of just a phone on the wall). The courtroom and records are now conveniently located just off the main lobby area. Upstairs you'll find administration offices/command staff, Training Division with large classrooms to host training events for Homewood officers as well as other municipalities. A new gym provides officers with the ability to work out on site. The building also houses a new state-of-the-art jail, dispatch, and special operations division. (FB is not letting me tag people so if you would like to tag yourself please feel free.)

Heavenly Father, I give thanks for those you created to be a positive example; for those who boldly say "I am saved" while in uniform, who recognize there is spiritual warfare they've been equipped to fight. I have seen a growing openness among these officers in sharing the Gospel; and we know that will make them a stronger force. May your protection follow them today. Amen.

Mike Wilson, legendary Saw’s BBQ pitmaster, dies

Such a loss for the Homewood community and all who loved Mike. Our prayers go out to his family.

Mike Wilson, the legendary Alabama pitmaster and founder of the Saw’s BBQ empire, has passed away. Wilson died “over the weekend,” according to Sam Pittinos, a bartender at Saw’s Juke Joint in Birmingham’s Crestline neighborhood.

HPD prayer: May the Lord bring you discernment today in all situations, to know who needs you, what they need and how to show God's mercies to them. And pray for those you have a difficult time feeling merciful towards. Help them grow in God’s grace. Men will try your patience, but God will try to reach them through you. Each one of you is equipped for an encounter today. Take it.

I was looking at the date and realized normally we would have enjoyed another National Night Out in Homewood this week. I know how much it means to the officers and other first responders to meet with citizens and talk with them about what they do; with good music and food, too. I believe this is the first year since I started volunteering at the event (2009) that we have not gathered together. And honestly this kind of interaction with the Homewood family of citizens is probably the most needed right now. So, in lieu of being able to meet in person I've selected some of my favorite memories from NNOs gone by. And if you missed having the event this year, you can still send some love. Encourage your kids to draw a picture or make a thank you card. Or send some treats. Sure, it's not quite the same as meeting in person but it WILL help meet the need we all have to connect and be encouraged.

On those days when you tell me "nothing happened;" when "all" you did was respond to a lost cell phone or spent hours on surveillance with no results; I saw this prayer that might give you a different perspective.

May God's voice be the calling you heed,
as you protect and serve those in need.
May you feel His presence on your beat, giving you wisdom for those you meet.
Lord give them courage and joy in the field, and be their strength, guide and sheild.

Amen.

Virginia boy hoping to collect police patches, coins for 7th birthday

Seeing this generation support police is so encouraging to officers. This boy still sees the character that these men and women embody and look up to them as an inspiration of what he wants to be. And he’s not afraid to show it. Rock on little dude. Rock on.

GLADE HILL, Va. (WSET) -- A little boy celebrating his birthday in September is hoping to collect items from his favorite people. Sheila Smith said her son Trevor will turn seven years old on September 1. She said he has always loved everything to do with police. When he was three, Sheila said he wa...

Uniform prayer: Lord, I ask your general hand of protection and encouragement over those who serve; those who will need strength to help someone else, to face the loss of a brother, and to simply stay motivated through an uneventful day. Help them to remember they have purpose through You, even in the seemingly smallest interactions with the community they serve — which can often make a big impact on someone’s day. Amen

May you feel the hand of God on your shoulder, helping to guide you and making you bolder. For you are ordained to uphold His laws, share His compassion, and further His cause. Remember as you put on your badge and your gun, that you are an officer of the Holy One.

May all of you in service have a glorious and safe day!

Not a Homewood officer but still family. Sergeant Carter's name will forever be remembered and discovered by everyone who walks by the memorial. If you haven't been I encourage you to visit and spend some time praying over these names.

Another officer added this morning. Sergeant Wytasha L. Carter. And while we weren't able to have a public event during this time, I imagine he would have appreciated the love and care that went into the engraving of his name. It is now where it should be; among others of his blue family who are memorialized here. A lovely couple happened by during the process and stopped to watch and talk with us about Sergeant Carter. They were strangers as they walked out of the courthouse, but left as new friends who have already shared on this page. The way it should be. Thanks to Rod with Clark Memorials for his beautiful work.

Uniform prayer for our officers and all the Blue Family: Your profession is ordained by God. There is someone very specific you will encounter today who you will be able to minister to, whether a citizen or a co worker. I pray He opens your heart to this need so you can be blessed. And if you are the one with the need, may He open someone else's heart to listen.

This week we were honored to deliver meals to support Homewood’s awesome First Responders and City Employee’s who continue to serve during this challenging time. Thanks to current President John Krontiras and Past President Tom Summers Hale with Hale Sides for taking the lead on this initiative, as well as Joey Sanders and Kay Trim at Master Image printing for donating the cards and of course Ted's Restaurant for providing all those meals! And for those of you have supported the Foundation we thank you for helping make services like this possible.

We’ve had so many great local businesses provide food, gift certificates, door prizes, and other support over the years for our officers and special events; from the Foundation’s yearly luncheon and the Citizens Police Academy to meals/treats at Christmas and during times of loss. Please be sure to support them as you can during this challenging time. Order meals to pick up, buy a gift certificate to use at a later time, shop on-line if they have that option. And of course, keep our officers in your prayers as they have to remain working and adding yet another risk to an already risky job. Homewood Cru Scott McBrayer Homewood Chamber of Commerce

Last night the friendly rivalry between HPD and Lakeshore athletes continued with what this observer has to say was one of the most fun competitions on the court. This was only the fifth time Lakeshore had played field hockey and the first time HPD played after several years of wheelchair football. It turned into more comic relief than competition, with each side egging each other on. But there were some pretty amazing plays, and the puck was sent hurling down the court equally... resulting in a close 9-7 win by Lakeshore. After the game, a check for over $800 was presented by the officers to Lakeshore as part of the Beards for Bucks campaign. So everyone was a winner. Thanks again to Lakeshore for the hospitality and for all they do in the Homewood community. And thanks to Board Member, Kelly Seibels, for coming out to help me cheer them on!

Update. Just received confirmation that he has passed.

We join the community in praying for this officer, his family, and the City of Kimberly. Shot in the line of duty last night. We often have no idea what our officers are protecting us from and going through as we sleep peacefully in our beds. #bluelivesmatter

This has been a rough 24 hours. We lost two precious members of the Homewood family within hours of each other - Chief John Bresnan of the Homewood Fire Department, and James K. Shaffer, a Homewood Dispatcher. Both were devoted to this community and friends to many of us. They will be greatly missed.

Uniform Prayer for Christmas: Lord, on your birthday, let each of these men and women feel reborn today. May the true spirit of Christmas envelope them so completely, that they see you in everyone they meet with today; either on the job or within their own families. Protect them as they protect us. Comfort them as they might have to comfort others. Let them be reminded what a gift they are every day. Amen

Every year we join forces with Homewood Officers to help make Christmas memorable for the members of the Exceptional Foundation. The officers raised over $2000 for the organization and topped it off by escorting Santa into the gym for a morning of fun, gifts, and music. We're proud to be a part of this Christmas tradition.
