Congratulations to Officer Vernarr Hughes who was named Officer of the Year by the City of Homewood! He is a prime example of why I love supporting this department. Vernarr always has a smile on his face, has great integrity, and puts others before himself. You can not leave an encounter with Vernarr without your own smile.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the kindness our citizens show our officers and all employees during the season. Every year, Citizens Police Academy alum Maureen Mccorkle cooks an elaborate breakfast and I have the honor of tagging along as she brings it to HPD headquarters for those working. (Ok, so she entrusts me with the scrambled eggs but that’s perhaps one thing I can’t mess up 😆).

This year we also walked in to a beautiful spread of treats from one of our corporate partners, Savage's Bakery… quite honestly a hometown bakery that could easily be from a Hallmark Christmas movie.

We have several officers, dispatch, and corrections officers working today instead of being home with their families. Please take a moment to pray for them and if you see them in the street give them a hearty “Merry Christmas” and thank you.

This is what makes Homewood special at Christmas and all year long. And it makes our goal with the Foundation possible. Merry Christmas to all today!

On Sunday, Vestavia, Homewood, an Mountain Brook First Responders gathered at Vestavia City Hall to honor the memories of those lost on September 11. Guest speaker Michael A. Williams had a front row seat that day as the top Secret Service official at the White House. He shared his experience and lessons learned from that day, with humility and gratitude. Yes, it's been 21 years. But the significance is as fresh as if it were yesterday. So much of our history was shaped by that day and many of the first responders and military who are active today were inspired by those events to pick up the baton and carry on the fight. My own nieces and nephews were not even born yet but it has certainly influenced their world. My prayer is that we never forget, never lose sight of why we MUST always remember, and ensure that generations to come don't just see it as another date from history they have to memorize. It was an honor, as always, to spend this day with my colleagues, friends, and family. Thank you to our sister association, Vestavia Hills Police Foundation, for allowing me to be a part of it. From the Hoover Climb to Remember. Much respect.

I’ll be posting more later but this moment from the stair climb needed to stand on its own. To me it embodies the emotion, spirit, and reverence of the day. And honestly I felt as if God had peeled back the curtain of time for me to catch but a glimpse of what those first responders experienced that day, and overcame to go where many wouldn’t have dared.

Every year Homewood officers and citizens are recognized for their outstanding work in tthe field and on the job. This year saw many acts that went above and beyond the call of duty and citizenship, including Edgewood's very own Sam Daibes. Sam has been serving our officers for decades, both while working at Moneer's and now as owner of Sam's Deli.

National Night Out 2022 was a huge success and proves once again that Homewood will always be a close-knit community that exudes the best of Normal Rockwell's renderings of small-town America. It's still alive and well here, with police, fire, vendors, and musicians joining with citizens to celebrate what makes Homewood special. Thank you to all who came out and made this a special evening again. Our officers love meeting the public they protect and serve.

Crimestoppers luncheon today brought together employees from the city, courts, law enforcement, and support services to celebrate the years successful apprehensions of criminals around the Birmingham area, thanks to the Crimestoppers program. Congratulations to this years honorees (including Homewood’s own Sergeant Chris Morgan) who all went above and beyond the call of duty to bring these criminals to justice. And of course I got to meet the K9 honoree, K9 Georgia and her handler, Renee Whitcomb, with Canine Companions. Georgia provides invaluable support to kids who are going through the court system or having to testify.

Wow! 4 years ago today the first shovels of dirt were moved to ceremoniously begin building the new Homewood PD headquarters on West Valley and Bagbey Drive. It’s not only provided a well-deserved space for our officers but a welcome presence in the neighborhood. So many great things have happened since they opened the doors.

They often go unnoticed. Especially in our suburban utopias. But in that moment of crisis, when the unimaginable happens, they make their presence known. Either as the saving grace of those in need or the hammer of justice to others. Whether in the blue of daily uniform or the camo of the tactical team, they tread where many never would; their badges reflecting honor and commitment even through the darkness. Yes, they often go unnoticed. Until you need them.

Thanks Roy Brook for standing up for the City of Homewood’s own James Yates. James was invaluable in helping me with the Foundation website and countless slide shows. And he was an invaluable witness for Jesus in how he cared for others, including his service in the Navy.

Last Friday, we celebrated one of our family who is moving on after years of dedicated service to the Homewood community. Scott Crafton worked in dispatch and then as a Corrections Officer for HPD. Now he joins the ranks of our retired family... which means he’ll probably be working harder now more than ever. That’s one thing I’ve learned about these amazing men and women. They never stop serving.

Compassion. Heroism. Service. These are just some of the acts our officers engage in on a daily basis that most will never know about, unless they happen to end up in a headline or mentioned on the news. But in general, they do these things without any fanfare or even thoughts of those actions ever being in the public eye. One of the blessings I receive in being involved in this Foundation is getting to know these officers and what they do for us. On Awards Day, those stories are recounted with pride and applauded by the community. From rescuing a human trafficking victim to risking their own safety to help a citizen who was in danger of being swept away by rushing waters in a ravine, these officers were out there this past year saving lives while many of us were “safe at home.”

May God give you strength to face the responsiblities you know are coming and the faith that something unexpectedly wonderful will happen in the process. May long hours in uniform have moments of joy. Thank you for keeeping up the fight, here at home and around the world.

Congratulations to Homewood Scout Ben Noerager in completing his Eagle Scout project for HPD K9s Vulcan and Shadow; a beautiful odor wall. Here, Officer Jordon Suggs and K9 Vulcan test it out. Vulcan gives it two paws up! In addition, Ben is donating the left over money from materials to the K9 Unit. These are the kinds of community relations we love to see. And so do the K9s! **GREAT JOB OFFICER SUTTON**

Andrew is a student at Bryan Elementary School in Kimberly, AL. Officer Sutton is a neighbor of PE Coach Recke and learned that someone had given Andrew a bicycle. The bicycle was in need of repair. Officer Sutton decided that he would pay to get the bicycle fixed and took the bicycle to Bob's Bikes in downtown Homewood. Today, Officer Sutton presented the newly repaired bicycle to Andrew. Well done Officer Sutton!

Uniform prayer for Monday: "The Lord bless and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you and give you peace." Congratulations to Homewood PD on its new headquarters in West Homewood! The official ribbon cutting yesterday brought city officials and citizens, as well as representatives from BL Harbert (the construction company in charge of the project) together to celebrate the official opening. Guests were then taken on a tour of the facility. Walking in to the building, visitors will find a large lobby area with personnel to assist them (instead of just a phone on the wall). The courtroom and records are now conveniently located just off the main lobby area. Upstairs you'll find administration offices/command staff, Training Division with large classrooms to host training events for Homewood officers as well as other municipalities. A new gym provides officers with the ability to work out on site. The building also houses a new state-of-the-art jail, dispatch, and special operations division. (FB is not letting me tag people so if you would like to tag yourself please feel free.)

I'm just an ordinary citizen -- in an extraordinary country. I wish I could extend my heartfelt thanks to every officer in the United States!

Sir and Ma'am: may your path be paved with words of appreciation and deeds of gratitude for your generous spirit and your public service.

If the forces of darkness come against you, please remember this reversal in 2 Kings 14-17:

So [the king of Aram] sent horses and chariots there and a great army; they came by night, and surrounded the city.

15 When an attendant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. His servant said, “Alas, master! What shall we do?” 16 He replied, “Do not be afraid, for there are more with us than there are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed: “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw; the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

May legions of God's angels surround you as your vanguard and your rearguard, on your right flank and your left.
Mark's Joint would like to show our supporting by donating 10% from all sales this Wednesday, April 3rd. Please come out, have some great food, and support a man who keeps our community safe.
