Several members of the OCIC team had the opportunity to attend the Pages Across the Plains: HEROES Regional Summer Literacy Workshop hosted by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Sand Springs Public Schools.

Throughout the day, educators engaged in learning focused on evidence-based literacy instruction and practical strategies that can be applied in classrooms across Oklahoma.

One idea shared during the learning sessions that resonated with our team was:

"If a child memorizes ten words, then the child can read ten words. But if the child can learn the sounds of ten letters, the child then can read 350 three-sound words, 4,320 four-sound words, and 21,650 five-sound words." — Dr. Martin Kozloff

This powerful example highlights the impact of strong foundational literacy instruction and the importance of equipping students with skills that open the door to lifelong learning.

Thank you to OSDE, Sand Springs Public Schools, and the many educators who helped make today's learning experience possible.

Educators, tribal partners, and community leaders came together with a shared purpose: honoring our Native students and strengthening the support we provide in every classroom.

Participants engaged in meaningful learning focused on:
▶️Practical strategies for infusing authentic Native American history and perspectives into daily instruction
▶️ Building strong relationships that support student success
▶️Recognizing and respecting different communication styles and cultural perspectives
▶️Celebrating the achievements, strengths, and accomplishments of Native students across our communities

A special thank you to our presenters, and all who shared their expertise, experiences, and passion for supporting Native learners. Your insights challenged us, inspired us, and provided actionable strategies that educators can immediately implement.

Most importantly, thank you to the teachers who invested their time in learning, reflecting, and growing together. The conversations, connections, and commitment to honoring Native voices will continue long after today’s event.

Together, we are creating classrooms where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
