Today Honolulu Ocean Safety made history. For the first time ever, two women guarded a north shore beach together. Kaiulani Bowers and Maddie Anzivino watched over the crowds gathered this Mother’s Day at Waimea Bay, from tower 29. Bowers an experienced water woman has 12 years as a city lifeguard and Anzivino an accomplished big wave surfer has two years with the city.

With a long storied history of more than 100 years of saving lives around O‘ahu’s 227 miles of coastline, the City & County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division took a historic leap forward today during a hearing before the City Council’s Committee on Zoning and Planning. On the agenda was a Special Management Area (SMA) permit request for Ocean Safety’s first ever facility, a rescue base operations station at Alāla Point in Kailua. The facility will be located across from Kailua Beach Park and the nearby boat ramp and will be built in compliance of all applicable federal, state, and county laws. Ocean Safety looks forward to being great neighbors to the residents of Kaneapu Place, Lanikai, and Kailua. Ocean Safety sends a heartfelt mahalo to for her help on communicating the importance of this facility to the nearby community, and to the Kailua Beach-going public. The new 1,680-square-foot facility is designed to blend into the hillside and not obstruct views. It will house emergency response equipment used by Lifeguards for responses at Kailua Bay and along the Windward Coast. We are grateful and excited for this opportunity to continue serving our island community and the chance to keep beachgoers safe.

Captain Paul Merino gave 40 plus years to the people who enjoy our beaches. Known as the ‘Keeper of Waikīkī’ he dedicated his life to keeping people safe in the ocean and mentoring hundreds of lifeguards over four decades. He will be deeply missed. Here are some great pieces of advice from the man himself. “Treat the people at the beach like they are your family. “ - Paul Merino,

A Honolulu Ocean Safety captain is retiring after more than 40 years of keeping beachgoers safe.

So many rescues go unrecognized. Most of the rescues we hear about or can share are captured with stills or video. We are grateful to the many of you who capture those for us. But we should also share the rescues that don’t get captured because of the real life-saving message each of them hold. Yesterday was a busy day at Sandy Beach. When lifeguard Ka’iulani Bowers got back from her break she took notice of a father with his two-year old in the water. They had been pulled out by the rip current. Ka’iulani sprinted down the beach and grabbed the child just as the father had let go of him and before a set was about to hit them. She brought the toddler to shore and the family went home safe that day. No applause, not much of a mahalo even (the parents were in shock). And while the incident could have been a nightmare on the beach, it wasn’t. Mahalo to for the beautiful photo. Have a safe week everyone and let’s all look out for each other. 🌊❤️💛
