Each year, the Hawaiʻi State Hospital holds a Remembrance Service to honor the 667 patients laid to rest on July 1, 1960. Last week, we were grateful to return to the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kāneʻohe for this moving ceremony.

This year’s gathering was a poignant reminder of the hospital’s long-standing mission of compassionate care and highlighted the progress made in fostering understanding of those living with mental illness.

Mahalo to all who attended and to the Hawaiʻi Clubhouse Coalition for providing refreshments after the ceremony!

: Remembering With Gratitude

As one of the first Japanese Americans to be certified as a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) supervisor, Reverend Kikuo Matsukawa’s impact extends far beyond his lifetime. His dedication and vision were instrumental in establishing CPE programs at the Hawaiʻi State Hospital, marking a significant milestone in pastoral education in Hawai‘i.

Kikuo's foresight extended to envisioning a new center focused on training clergy and religious workers from Pacific Rim countries. His belief in Hawaiʻi's cultural and religious diversity as a natural teaching environment has proven true, with Pacific Health Ministry training individuals from over 30 countries, shaping the future of pastoral care worldwide.

Kikuo's spirit and contributions continue to inspire us. We are forever grateful for his vision and unwavering support, which have been instrumental in shaping PHM into what it is today.

: Remembering With Gratitude

There are many individuals who have played a role in shaping PHM into what it is today –– Reverend Frank Chong was one of them.

Frank was a beacon of compassion and service. Despite facing personal health challenges, his words, “We are all called to share in the sufferings of others,” resonated in his actions. Frank's dedication to PHM, the American Cancer Society, and various community endeavors showcased a life devoted to uplifting the disenfranchised. His impact remains woven into our mission, a testament to a good and faithful servant.

Mahalo, Reverend Frank, for your enduring contributions to PHM!
