Even when no one answers right away, the faded rubber and Sunday best by the mat quietly say, “Eh, we hea. Come inside.”
The wild part is how everyone can read this system without a sign or a rule book. You pull up to a house, see the row of slippers, and your body already knows to take yours off. No speech, just a habit handed down from tutu to parents to keiki. For all the complicated ways we try to organize our lives, these little rubber footprints at the front door might be one of the simplest and most human.
