Friday I joined my colleagues visiting local businesses as part of the Chamber of Commerceʻs Hawaiʻi Manufacturing Day. Making products in Hawaiʻi for Hawaiʻi is a key industry in our State, helping promote our brand and providing for import substitution. Manufacturers account for 1.73% of the total output in the State, employing 1.93% of the workforce. Total output from manufacturing was $1.66 billion in 2019. Mahalo to the Chamber for providing this opportunity. Seeing our potential in growing economic sustainability within our islands was inspiring.

Indigenous Peoplesʻ Day holiday honors the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the US. The holiday recognizes the legacy and impact of colonialism on Native communities and celebrates the cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples. On October 8, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden became the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday by signing a presidential proclamation declaring October 11, 2021 as a national holiday. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities.

This morning, 75 Elementary School students and their teachers toured the Capitol. It was their first field trip since the pandemic began, and our office coordinated visits to the House Chamber, Governorʻs Office, and Public Access Room. The group had a full and enriching morning, from learning about the symbolism of our Capitolʻs architecture to finding the elusive red tile in the rotunda mosaic.

Mahalo to all the volunteers who helped spruce up Kailua today. Buckets and bags of rubbish were collected and we returned four shopping carts to their respective grocery stores. Very rewarding work but there is still much more to do.

Do you have an issue that you are concerned about? Join our monthly committee meetings where we take a deeper dive on issues impacting our community. Work with board members who will offer ideas and make recommendations. We can't always solve the issue--but we often know where to go and have resources to help highlight your concerns with elected officials and those in positions of authority. Our meetings are open to all. *Note: Executive Committee and the Addressing Homelessness in Kailua Subcommittee meet quarterly. Please refer to the agenda on the honolulu.gov/NCO website for meeting dates and times.

Today commemorates the formal conclusion of , recognized in a solemn ceremony aboard the USS Missouri, where General MacArthur signed the surrender papers 77 years ago. At today's event, we heard General MacArthurʻs original speech, which included hope for "a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish..for freedom, tolerance, and justice.” It was a morning of important and honor for those who sacrificed so much for our .
