Why here and why now?

Hawaiʻi’s food system is increasingly vulnerable to global supply chain shocks, climate pressures, and rising costs, all of which disproportionately impacts marginalized families and communities.

Pacific Gateway Center is a Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit advancing economic opportunity for immigrant and refugee communities.

Through workforce development, small business support, and community resilience initiatives, PGC works to remove systemic barriers that limit long-term stability.

Growing Roots builds on that foundation by positioning agriculture as a pathway to economic mobility, food security, cultural knowledge preservation and community-based resilience.

PGC Farms Haleʻiwa represents the next chapter of that work on Oʻahu’s North Shore.

The recent Kona Low storm was a powerful reminder of both the vulnerability and resilience of Hawaiʻi’s agricultural community.

In a recent discussion on The Conversation - Hawaii Public Radio, PGC's Executive Director, Matthew Johnson, shared how the storm impacted the organization’s newly opened agricultural park in Haleiwa. The ag park, which opened last December, was created to support beginning farmers, increase local food production, and strengthen Hawaiʻi’s food system.

Severe weather events like this highlight the real challenges farmers face—from flooding and crop damage to infrastructure impacts. But they also reinforce why investments in resilient agricultural infrastructure and farmer support programs are so important.
Even in the face of these challenges, PGC remains committed to supporting local farmers, rebuilding where needed, and continuing the work of strengthening Hawaiʻi’s local food economy.

In times like these, clear communication matters.

As Hawaiʻi communities recover from recent storms, many families face language barriers when accessing critical resources and support.

Hawaiʻi Language Bank provides translation and interpretation in 40+ languages -including strong support for Micronesian communities- to help ensure equitable access during recovery.

If your organization is assisting impacted individuals, we’re here to support.

It’s a difficult day for farmers in Hawai‘i. After visiting Pacific Gateway Center’s (PGC) new ag park on the North Shore to assess damage from the recent flooding, we also learned that the USDA has terminated funding for PGC’s “Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program,” which provides critical technical support to farmers statewide. https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/24/usda-cancels-program-help-farmers-buy-land-00841948

While these challenges are significant, Hawai‘i’s farmers are incredibly resilient—and we know they will continue doing what they love and feeding our communities!
